Cuban-born Celia Cruz was internationally
recognized as the ‘Queen
of Salsa’ and, during her lifetime, received
numerous awards including three

The Woodlawn Cemetery & Conservancy
announces the upcoming
Free ‘Celia Cruz, the Queen of Salsa,
Exhibit and Concert,’ to be held Thursday,
September 12 through Sunday, 15.
The exhibit, held in conjunction with the
Celia Cruz Estate and Celia Cruz Legacy
Project, will feature costumes, wigs,
stage hats, shoes and personal photographs
which document the life of the
‘Queen of Salsa.’
A video documentary, provided by
the estate, will be shown during the exhibit,
which will run daily from 9 a.m. to
4 p.m. in Woodlawn’s Woolworth Chapel.
Exhibit curator, Omer Pardillo Cid,
president of the Celia Cruz Foundation,
stated that it is rare that an exhibit of this
magnitude has been hosted in the New
York City area and is offered free to the
community.
Woodlawn’s president, Mitch Rose,
said, “Woodlawn is honored to have
been chosen as the fi nal resting place
of Celia Cruz and her husband and manager,
Pedro Knight. 2019 marks the second
time we are able to offer the Exhibit
and Concert at Woodlawn as a service
to our community and as a tribute to a
life well lived. With close to 3,000 people
in attendance last year, greater numbers
are expected to turn out this year.”
Throughout the exhibit, the Woodlawn
Conservancy Trolley will shuttle attendees
to and from the exhibit and the
Cruz Mausoleum, which will be open for

GRAMMY Awards, four Latin GRAMMYs
and The Lifetime Achievement Award
of the Smithsonian Institution. In 1987,
Hollywood bestowed on her a star in
the Walk of Fame. In 1994, U.S. President
Bill Clinton awarded her the highest
honor the country bestows upon an
artist: The National Endowment for the
Arts. The Smithsonian Museum hosted
an exhibit called Azúcar: The Life and
Music of Celia Cruz from 2005-2015, and
in 2011, the United States Postal Service
honored her invaluable contributions to
the entertainment industry and international
impact by placing her image on a
US postage stamp as part of the Latin
Music Legends Series.
The ‘Celia Cruz, the Queen of Salsa,
Exhibit and Concert’ is a free event and
open to the public. Registration is required

Walk: Figuring the Floral: Tour the exhibition
Figuring the Floral with an exhibiting
artist and a Wave Hill horticultural
interpreter, then venture out into the gardens
to see how some of the fl owers are
used symbolically by the artists to express
representations of identity. Free
with admission to the grounds. Meet at
Glyndor Gallery, 2 p.m.
Sunday, July 28: Yoga in the Garden:
On Sundays through July, enjoy the gardens
as the setting for your yoga practice
as your fi nd your breath and become
connected to the landscape. Classes
are led by certifi ed Yoga Haven instructors.
All levels welcome. Please bring a
mat and be on time. This class is rain or
shine; the rain location is Glyndor Gallery.
$25; Wave Hill Members save 10%.

Sunday, July 28: Meet the Artist: Kate
Bae: Join in at this artist talk with Kate
Bae and Curator of Visual Arts Eileen
Jeng Lynch about her installation in the
Sunroom. Bae’s immersive installation
consists of fl owers created from layers of
acrylic paint. They drape from the ceiling
into a wishing well that encourages visitors
to refl ect, toss coins or fl oat paper
origami boats. The landscape evokes
the ecosystem of Mount Halla on South
Korea’s Jeju Island, a holy symbol of the
unifi cation of South Korea and North Korea.

for a public tour of seasonal garden

Riad Miah: Join in at this artist talk with
Riad Miah and Curator of Visual Arts Eileen
Jeng Lynch about his installation
in the Sun Porch. Miah creates a multipart
installation of double-sided, oil and
acrylic, rectangular paintings on Dura-
Lar. He traces light throughout the calendar
year to portray a sense of time,
with each piece representing a single
month. Incorporating the colors and atmosphere
of the landscape, the work
explores the artist’s continued interest in
light as a medium. Free with admission
to the grounds. Glyndor Gallery, 3 p.m.

The Bronx Academy of Arts &
Dance reignites its newest series called
Courageous Conversations: Strategies
for Living and Loving in America, a free
mix of topical talks and resilience workshops
led by leading thinkers and doers
from the arts, media and politics, followed
by a facilitated/open community
forum for queer people and allies on how
to navigate and thrive in the current political
climate.
The series kick-off will be on Tuesday,
July 23. at 7 p.m. at BAAD! 2474

the award-winning cartoonists, Jennifer
Camper and Ivan Velez, Jr. These
two powerhouses have fostered change
through their art, activism and professional
practice.
