Selected For
Prestigious Academy
The United States Marine
Corps announces that Janieces
Valles of St. Raymond
Academy for Girls, was selected
for and attended the 2019
Semper Fidelis All-American
Program Battles Won Academy
from Thursday, July 11 to
Monday July 15 in Washington
D.C.
During the academy, students
experience leadership
lessons at the Marine Corps Offi
cer Candidates School, team
building events, community
service and a history-themed
scavenger hunt on the National
Mall.
This year, one of the most
engaging and rewarding opportunities
was a community service
event during which participants
built and presented
20 brand-new bikes to the Boys
& Girls Clubs of Greater Washington.
Valles was selected not only
for her athletic performance
but for outstanding character,
academic excellence, and community
leadership that refl ects
the Marine Corps’ values of
honor, courage, and commitment.
Valles and her mentor, Jessica
Rivera joined other outstanding
leaders in Washington
for the event.
Just 100 top student leaders
from around the country were
selected for this honor.
111-Year-Old Passes Away
Charlotte Lockett, age
111, who was believed to have
been the oldest living Bronxite,
passed away on Sunday, June
2.
Lockett was honored by the
Borough President Ruben Diaz
Jr. in 2015 when she was 107.
She was born October 12,
1907 in Edgefi eld, SC as Charlotte
Tucker.
During her early years,
Lockett was educated in the
Charolotte Locket
Catholic school system in Augusta,
GA.
Lockett migrated with her
mother and siblings to Harlem
in Manhattan. Her father died
when she was a young girl.
She married Hampton Lockett
on March 6, 1936. The couple
had three children. Hampton
passed away in 1962.
Lockett found her work as a
dietitian at St. Vincent’s Medical
Center very rewarding.
Her retirement from St.
Vincent’s afforded her the opportunity
to spend time with
her family.
As a result of her generous
spirit and pleasant personality
she was loved by many.
Her essence and beauty will
forever be cherished in all the
lives of her family.
