For the fourth year,
Rensselaer Polytechnic
Institute (RPI) Engineering
Ambassadors have
joined forces with St.
Raymond High School for
Boys to share their message,
‘Find your passion
and Engineer It.’ The RPI
Engineering Ambassadors
participated in a full
day of engineering demonstrations
accompanied
by hands-on activities for
St. Raymond students to
explore the many applications
of engineering.
The RPI Engineering
Ambassadors are a
group of student engineers
devoted to inspiring
younger students to
explore STEM fi elds by
showing them the newest
technological breakthroughs
in their fi elds
and the obstacles yet to be
overcome. The group was
established in the spring
of 2011 and since its inception
has reached more
than 30,000 students in
the Bronx and surrounding
areas. Since RPI’s
fi rst visit four years ago,
student interest in the
fi eld of engineering has
grown tremendously at
St. Raymond.
Throughout the day,
the RPI Engineering Ambassadors
spoke about
different applications of
engineering including
Humanitarian Logistics
focusing on the increasing
number of disasters
affecting communities
worldwide, Biosensing
focusing on the importance
of making correct
medical diagnoses, and
fi nally Drag Force which
reviews the importance
and consequences of drag
force in real applications,
like sports and care fuel
effi ciency. Each presentation
began with an educational
video and was
followed by a hands-on
experiment or group
workshop. There was
also one special workshop
presented by St. Raymond’s
own Engineering
teacher,. Ted Povinelli.
During. Povinelli’s ‘Introduction
to Engineering’
class the RPI Ambassadors
observed the
students working on their
aerodynamics project.
Students designed, built
and tested airplane wing
design and through the
trial and error process
refi ned their designs.
