The 11th Annual Vendy Awards, New York City’s premier street food competition, has announced the finalists who will duke it out for the top prize on Saturday, Sept. 12, on Governor’s Island from 12:30 to 5 p.m. This year, a few top contenders from the LIC Flea have been nominated in a brand-new category called Street Drinks. Flea favorite Tea + Milk will put their magnificent bubble teas up against the whimsical refreshments of Renegade Lemonade (formerly known as Frittering Away). The LIC Flea served as the training ground for both vendors. Tea + Milk now has a brick-and-mortar shop at 32-02 34th Ave. Renegade Lemonade served their beverages this year at Madison Square Eats and on Mondays at the HBO Bryant Park Summer Film Festival. Another Astoria vendor up for a Vendy Award is the Souvlaki Lady who runs a popular Greek food cart on Ditmars Boulevard. Her cart is in the running for the coveted Vendy Cup, the competition’s top honor. Other categories to be presented with awards at the event include Rookie of the Year, Best Market Vendor and Best Dessert. Last year’s winner for best dessert was LIC Flea favorite Ice + Vice, who recently opened their own ice cream store at 221 E. Broadway in Manhattan. Their unconventional flavors are making a huge hit downtown, with titles like Shiso Pretty, Basic B and Gold Digger. Can’t decide which vendor is your favorite? Try the marriage of two of them with the new floats being offered at the Ice + Vice store, featuring the powerhouse duo of their frosty desserts with Renegade Lemonade.
