Just Like Mom’s The departure of Brick Café came as a devastating shock to many. But when one door closes, another one opens. First, the northern portion of Brick Café transitioned into Halsey’s Tavern, and then the remaining portion of the space recently morphed into Mom’s Kitchen and Bar. Now they’re two distinctly separate locations, still connected at the kitchen, and we figured it was time to stop by and check them out. Presently, Mom’s is debuting with a soft opening daily at 5 p.m. with regular hours coming soon. With a name like Mom’s, you know you can expect some down home-style comfort cuisine. And what could be more comforting than an all-day brunch? Mac ‘n’ cheese pancakes with Cholula honey, jumbo shrimp with cheesy grits, and bacon-laced waffles with fried chicken take the spotlight alongside a killer Tex Benedict with braised brisket, Texas toast, hollandaise and pickled jalapeños. Disco fries are upgraded to heavy metal with cheese curds and peppercorn gravy, but we recommend you sample those cheese curds all on their own—beer-battered and fried with a ramekin of spicy pepper jam. In addition, who doesn’t want to grab a handful of Cracker Jack bacon? Sometimes less is more, and you can’t go wrong with the Southern-style chicken filet with garlic aioli and pickle slaw on a toasted brioche served with plump fries. Or you can build your own breakfast, complete with sweet potato home fries. Perhaps you will simply want to stop by for a Bigmouth Shake, with throwback names reminiscent of the ‘80s.
