51-18 Skillman Avenue Queens Growth and progress are exciting and essential for any community, especially when business development is coming from one of its own. Astoria native Chris Carlsen sits down with BORO Magazine to share a sneak peek at Iron Lion Performance, Astoria’s newest Strength & Conditioning Facility, set to open to the public on July 23. BORO: Tell us a little about the physical space. Chris Carlsen: When you walk into Iron Lion, you are greeted with 15 yards of turf with two push sleds. To one side of the turf, we have strength area number 1. This area is equipped with two power racks, one platform and a designated deadlift area. At the other the end of the turf is strength area number 2. This is equipped with another rack, platform, Airdyne bikes and pull-up station with Olympic rings. Kettlebells are placed around the perimeter of the facility for easy accessibility from anywhere in the gym. It's a place that is centered around training but with a professional feel. BORO: What was the impetus behind the creation of Iron Lion Performance, and how is it unique to the fitness scene in Astoria? CC: The Iron Lion training system was created with the purpose of providing lifelong fitness and health to the community. To accomplish this, we have developed a system to fit the individual needs of each one of our clients. Every client is given an initial progress session, a specialized workout that will detect strengths, weaknesses and imbalances that inform and assist us with the creation of an individualized program and help advise on what membership will get them the results they are looking for safely and effectively. The Iron Lion coaches will then devise a plan to get you stronger and leaner through precise exercise progressions that will maximize your physical potential. No matter what membership you have, you will be given a new program every four weeks. Each program builds on the last and allows your body to adapt in a safe manner. The training doesn't end with your session, as you are given homework to do at Iron Lion on your own. During open gym hours, we will always have a trainer on hand to help you out with questions, a spot, or input on your homework routine. BORO: What do you enjoy about the health and fitness field, and what is its role in our community? CC: Planning, preparation, building a foundation, patterning and strength are not just important for long-term fitness but in life as well. Exercise gives you the strength, flexibility, mobility and poise to own your life. Training can help you prove to yourself that you have unlimited potential. For athletes (which everyone is) it's performing at a high level consistently and safely. As we get older, it's being able to pick up things, playing with grandchildren, and enjoying the fruits of our labor pain free. Weight training has not only strengthened me physically but mentally as well. It has given me strength and confidence to overcome obstacles that I may face in life. It's a great feeling and I enjoy nothing better than to share that with others. BORO: What is your ultimate vision for the business? CC: The ultimate vision is to have us recognized as a go-to provider for the best performance-based training around. We want people who desire to better themselves every day to know Iron Lion is their second home. Also, for coaches and parents, we want to display that Iron Lion is a safe place that will give their athletes an advantage over the competition. JULY 2016 | BOROMAG.COM | 19
