room, bursting with oranges, yellows and
blues, almost Rothko-esque in design. But
this piece is completely unique, painted
by Strautmanis' grandfather, Edvins
Strautmanis (edvinsstrautmanisart.com).
It sits behind a low, cream couch that was
custom-made, but not for them.
“I saw it on Craigslist,” Strautmanis said. “It
originally was a custom-built couch for the person
who purchased it. I think it was $2,000, or
something insane. But I want people to know
that you don’t need to have a lot of money to
have nice things. In New York City, people are
affluent and they get rid of stuff because it’s
easier than selling it.”
Their “Mad Men” bar on the opposite corner
of the room was another Craigslist find, and
originally a desk. The artwork is either their
own or gifts.
One of the few pieces newly bought is the
corner TV stand. The sides are slanted to perfectly
nudge into the corner of the room – a
difficult find.
“We tried to disguise the TV by putting big
art around it to make it seem like it’s not just
a big black square,” Strautmanis said. “I love
television. I wanted a very television-focused
room. I’m not shy about like, I love to bingewatch
and watch movies, but when you walk in
the room, it’s not about the TV.”
It’s framed by a “Pacific Rim” poster and a
Japanese-style print, a gift from Supino’s mom.
“He Supino has great taste in pieces,”
Strautmanis said. “He gave me lay of the land
