they wish to the music.
She trained in American Tribal Style,
a modern style of dance created by Fat-
Chance BellyDance director Carolena
Nericcio, and performed with their Manhattan
Tribal group for 10 years. She also
has a background in the Salimpour method,
which began standardizing terminology
for the movements in the 1949.
“People are usually fascinated by the
fact that there are so many different styles
of belly dance; for instance, some of the
more traditional styles include Egyptian
Raqs Sharqi and Shaabi, Turkish Romani,
while the newer styles include Tribal, Fusion
or American Tribal Style,” Cartsos
said. “The one common theme among
all the styles is the sense of feeling connected
to the earth and allowing the hips
to move freely.”
As we entered the studio, Cartsos told
me she was teaching a fusion-style class.
She put on the music, introducing it as
an Israeli remix of a Radiohead song.
We warmed up by stretching our legs
and hips, with some squats, which eased
me in. “I can squat. I know the band," I
thought, feeling like this was something I
