If you’re headed to The World’s Fare at
Citi Field on May 18 or 19, keep an eye
out for Astoria resident Kerri Boccard
of Kurrabee Art; she’ll be selling her vibrant
artwork at the shopping pavilion.
We chatted with her about her inspiration,
the Astoria arts community and the
upcoming World’s Fare:
BORO: How long have you lived in Astoria?
Kerri Boccard: I am new to Astoria! I
moved to my beautiful little Ditmars apartment
in October 2018 after living in Florence,
Italy, for a year with my fiancé. Seven
months in Astoria and I continue to fall in
love with it more each day.
BORO: Tell us about your artwork.
KB: My artwork is personal, yet relatable
with a main focus on florals and females. My
pieces are often vibrant and whimsical often
peppered with a dark twist, allowing onlookers
their own interpretation.
BORO: What inspires your art?
KB: My artwork is truly inspired by myself
— amplified emotions, personal experiences
and all. I think it is important to realize you can
be your own inspiration, your own muse. Painting
for me is self-love. It’s a release to place the
thoughts from my head onto the tip of a paint
brush. For this reason I refer to my artwork as
“Brain Flowers” — the thoughts come, grow in
my mind and bloom onto canvas.
BORO: What do you think of the Astoria
arts community?
KB: The Astoria arts community is fantastic.
From the street art, to the studios and
local vendors displaying local artists — it is
inescapable. My favorite moments always
involve entering a shop and unexpectedly
stumbling upon pieces that make my eyes
dance. It’s so wonderful living in a place that
is drenched in various types of artwork.
BORO: What excites you most about
being part of The World's Fare Shopping
Pavilion?
KB: I am most excited to vend alongside
the incredible participants at The World’s
Fare! I’m particularly ecstatic to be immersed
in the food, music, artwork, fashion and
mostly the people! I love interacting and
meeting new people, especially in an event
as culturally and artistically diverse as this.
Excited is an understatement.
BORO: Anything else you'd like to add?
KB: Creating is the backbone of this life,
whether you’re making art, music, food,
dancing, etc. — do it. Do it with intention and
do it with love. Surround yourself with those
who uplift you. On that note, I want to thank
my beautiful best friend, my firecracker of a
fiancé and my family for making my time at
The World’s Fare a reality.
