realize that there are some predicaments
that will always be present, like
schoolchildren not being able to afford
supplies or tuition. During each holiday
season and at the beginning of each
school year, the business owners donate
a portion of their proceeds to children in
need of school supplies and scholarships.
“There are about four students that we
sponsor annually for their school tuition, all
through recommendations from elders
in the community,” Choi said. “There isn't
currently a formalized application process
— it’s more, ‘Hey, there's a child who can't

At first glance, Bordahan may seem like
a normal, meticulously crafted embroidery
shop, but Choi and Kim made it about
something much greater. Through their
generosity and care for the communities
they work in, they’ve embedded their
story and goodwill in their beautiful
products’ thread, weaving together
women’s empowerment, safety of children
and the overall well-being of others.
