When Stacy Magallon's parents
vacated her childhood
apartment upon moving out
east to Long Island, Magallon
began living alone in the twobedroom
space. This is the
only home she’s ever known,
but without her parents there, Magallon,
a designer at a PR firm, began to think
of creative ways to make the space her
own after sharing it with her parents all
her life.
“It's a pretty big space,” she said. “But
it just felt like we were always brushing
shoulders with each other. With that in
mind, I was like, this place needs to feel
more open, more bright.”
To start, she migrated her things
over to the master bedroom and
turned what was once her old room
into a recreational area with a vanity

in part to host friends and get ready for
nights out.

with turquoise carpet. Magallon removed
the carpet, replacing it with lightly tinted

throughout the space.
The white couch, adorned with throw pillows
and a chunky blanket, is the centerpiece in
the living room. Above the couch are three
framed typographic artworks, each containing
numerals that together indicate the date of
Magallon’s birthday.
Across from the couch is a TV whose stand
is lined with superheroes (and supervillains)
from Marvel Cinematic Universe, DC and
the Star Wars franchise — a testament to
Magallon's “nerdy” interests.
Despite wanting to make something new
of the space, Magallon also hoped to pay
