I may or may not have decided to live in Astoria just for Sai Organics.
This family-owned organic market and vegan and vegetarian deli is a
must-try for any veggie lover who has a big appetite or a raging sweet
tooth. The shop’s gems include a coffee bar (equipped with vegan milk
and creamers) and a fresh and hot soup bar. I can’t get enough of their
lentil vegetable soup, and it even comes with a free slice of vegan bread.
They also make different types of hearty and filling sandwiches including
scrambled tofu (the best breakfast ever), tofurky, tempeh and hummus.
When you’re in dire need of dessert, I highly recommend their rich
vegan brownie. They also offer vegan cookies, muffins and slices of cake.
FOOD + DRINK
Before I moved to Astoria a little over a year ago, I made sure the neighborhood’s eating out
— or Seamless — options were right for me. As a vegan going on five years, this made my
hunt a little more interesting, and as it turns out, Astoria, Sunnyside and Long Island City are
teeming with with delicious (and affordable) vegan eats. I was delighted to discover mouthwatering
vegan-friendly dishes just steps away from my apartment, and I was even more
excited to share these places with my local friends, roommates or whoever would listen.
Whether you are a diehard vegan, an all-around foodie or even someone who is skeptical of plantbased
diets, give these local spots a try. I guarantee I’ll make a believer out of you.
