BUILDING HIGHLIGHTS:
Airport sustainability
innnovations
BY FELIPE A. RODRIGUEZ, MBA,

Airport Sustainability Innovations.
There are different types
of innovations, whether its energy,
waste reduction or even recycling.
As Webster’s dictionary
defi nes it, Innovation is “something
that is newly introduced”.
You have local, state and federal
programs that support and
encourage sustainability when
it comes to airports, As we all
know airports in many regions
throughout the United States, are
major economic engines, and sustainability
is key to their progression
and overall success. To narrow
the spectrum from a federal
level, there are federal programs
that are being used not only
throughout the U.S. but in the local
regions, such as JFK, EWR
& LGA. These specifi c airports
have high enplanement rates,
high traffi c volume and have high
employment thought the tri-state
area. Not only do they impact
the region in an strong economic
manner but in practicing sustainability
altogether. By this, I mean
sustainability affects communities
and the environment. The
overall goal of the Federal Aviation
Administration (FAA) is to
reduce the environmental impact,
prioritize economic growth
and have growing social progress.
An example of a federal program
would be VALE, Voluntary
Airport Low Emissions program,
this program assists the airport
in improving the air quality and
provides credits when it comes to
applying for funding and grants.
The program, which was created
in 2004 falls under the Clean Air
Act. JFK airport is currently participating
in this program. By being
involved in the program the
airport and others that are currently
enrolled can use Airport
Improvement Program funds
(AIP) and the Passenger facility
Charges (PFC’s) to fi nance such
purchases to help with such air
quality improvements. An examples
would entail vehicles that
have low emissions and recharging
stations (electric).
Another program, The Airport
Carbon Accreditation program
is an independent program
that encourages and identifi es
the importance of sustainability.
The program recognizes airports
throughout the world for cutting
down their carbon footprint and
being more sustainable. They
have a 4-tier concept which entails;
Mapping, Reducing, Optimization,
and Neutrality. Mapping
means that an airport has
taken the initiative and is in the
1st step in measuring its carbon
footprint. The 2nd step is Reduction,
an overall reduction of the
airports carbon footprint. 3rd,
Optimization which entails that
an airport has communicated
with other operators such as their
tenants to reduce the co2. Lastly,
Neutrality is when the airport is
offsetting any residual co2 emissions
from the aiport operator.
According to the program,
EWR and JFK are reducing their
co2 emissions, and LGA has
mapped their carbon footprint.
This shows that the Port Authority
has taken the initiative to decrease
their overall carbon footprint,
which is another sign of
positive sustainability innovation.
From an individual aspect,
one can gain more insight, knowledge,
and even an accreditation
within sustainability incentive
such as with the accreditation
program called, Leadership in
Energy and Environmental Design
(LEED), this is an accreditation
program that is sponsored
by the U.S. Green Building Council
(USGBC). There are different
specialties in where one can become
LEED certifi ed, such as in
specializing in homes, buildings,
cities and communities when it
comes to construction. JFK Terminal
4 is the only terminal with
a Gold Leed standard.
As you can see there are different
types of sustainability innovations,
whether it’s from an organizational
perspective, such as
airports and communities within
the airport vicinity, and from the
individual aspect that want to be
accredited and LEED certifi ed.
The bottom line is that the world
is changing and we as aviation
enthusiasts and travelers, need to
acclimate with it.
By becoming more sustainability
conscientious, it is going
to benefi t us all in the long run.
One thing to keep in mind, is that
the overall goal is to have an ecofriendly
airport system.
Lastly, congratulations to the
Port Authority of NY/NJ for supporting
EWR, JFK, and LGA in
being a part of an international
sustainability project. The fact
that these three major airports
that endure mass amounts of
traffi c, are assisting in setting
the standards for sustainability
which is a promising sign that
airports throughout the world
are setting the trend for other industries
to follow.
