Runway Update for JFK Airport
BY JEFF YAPALATER
The runway reconstruction
at JFK Airport is moving
along and is expected to
be completed on time, on the
condition that Mother Nature
does not hit the area with any
sustained inclement weather
hampering and delaying all
the work.
General Manager Charles
Everett and his staff are doing
their best to meet the objectives
of the work and to honor
the wishes of the airline community
in keeping the community
informed as to the
progress and any issues that
may occur along the way. Everett
publishes a weekly runway
update, his staff holds
regular phone conferences
and the Airport Operations
Center is in touch with the
stakeholders on a daily basis
if needed to share important
runway construction and any
other important airport matters.
The runway construction
was not the issue but the prospect
of a new runway at the
area airports were raised at
the recent Crain’s Breakfast
Infrastructure meeting. A
question was posed to Port Executive
Director Rick Cotton
asking where there are any
plans for an additional runway
at the redevelopment plan
for JFK. “There is not, on the
table, a consideration of a new
runway,” Cotton said.
This fear of another runway
at both JFK and LaGuardia
is a persistent subject that
comes up in virtually every
NYCAR committee meetings.
On each occasion the answer
is a resounding “NO”. However,
the lack of trust between
the surrounding communities
and the Port Authority is
great. Given the relative secret
nature of meetings, planning
and negotiations, by the
Port, it is not surprising that
many stakeholder voice their
concerns regularly to make
sure the Port is aware of the
concerns.
Not too long ago one La-
Guardia Committee member
suggested that there are plans
for a new runway at LGA.
The representative from the
FAA denied it and said the
bureaucratic, environmental
and cost to do so would make
it near impossible. This remark
temporarily appeased
the stakeholder but one could
see the rolling eyes of disbelievers.
At the Crain’s meeting Cotton
asserted that enhanced
air-traffic-control technology
and larger aircraft will
increase passenger volume
without having to bring a
larger number of the number
of aircraft into either airport.
Instead, the Port Authority
is enlarging and improving
terminals with the JFK redevelopment
of Terminals 1 & 5,
and improving traffic with the
Van Wyck Expressway widening.
Back to the idea of an additional
runway, Congressman
Meeks responded to the issue
saying , “No additional runways,”
.Meeks is co-chair of
the JFK Redevelopment Council
and strongly sides with
nearby community airport
concerns on noise, traffic and
well being.
