 Race to sonic transport
 Hermeus faces off with BOOM
 Hermeus Corporation, a startup
increasing the speed of air transportation
 by developing hypersonic aircraft,
  today announced a Seed round
investment. The round was led by
 Khosla Ventures, with additional
 participation from private investors.
The fi nancing will further the development
 and test of Hermeus’ hypersonic
 propulsion system.
 BOOM superspnic had previously
 announced its progress on its
supersonic aicrcaft that it plans to
bring to reality in a coupleof years
with 3.5 hour crossing from NY to
 London.
 Now Hermeus has announced
 its hypersonic aircraft which will
do the dame distance in 1.5 jhours.
 Both aircraft are inderdevelopment

 and use different technilogy
 thereby accountinf roteh difference
 is travel time.
 “Hermeus is developing an aircraft
that not only improves the aviation
 experience with very reduced
fl ight times, but also has the potential
to have great societal and economic
 impact.” said Vinod Khosla,
 founder of Khosla Ventures.
“We’ve set out on a journey to
 revolutionize the global transportation
 infrastructure, bringing it
from the equivalent of dial-up into
the broadband era, by radically increasing
 the speed of travel over
 long distances.” said co-founder
and CEO AJ Piplica. “We’re excited
to work with Khosla Ventures to
 turn this vision into reality.”
Mechanics at AA have been at
the negotiating table on and off the
fi ve years. Recently the rhetoric
has risen and tempers are running
 short.
The following is a statement from
 Richard Honeycutt, Vice President of
 Communications Workers of America
District 3 and Chair of the CWA
Airlines Council, in response to news
that American Airlines has fi led for
 a preliminary injunction against the
 International Association of Machinists
 and Aerospace Workers and the
 Transport Workers Union of America.
   The TWU-IAM association has
been attempting to negotiate a collective
 bargaining agreement for mechanics
 and ramp workers at American
 for fi ve years.“CWA’s passenger
service agents are united in support
of the members of the TWU-IAM association
 at American Airlines and
their fi ght for a fair contract. Our
passengers deserve to travel on safe
 and reliable aircraft, and sending
 more maintenance work to offshore
contractors does not meet the high
 standards that American should be
 striving to achieve.
 American Airlines modernizes fleet
Uses Boeing 777 on transatlantic flights
For American Airlines, this is a
 summer of building trans-Atlantic
 service, boosted by unique strategies
that include fl ying all Boeing
777s from New York Kennedy and
 adding the fi rst-ever Chicago-Athens
 nonstop fl ight.
The world’s largest carrier is taking
 an innovative approach, with
the JFK strategy as the most striking
 piece converting its JFK trans-
Atlantic operation to all Boeing 777s.
 American will add 1,216 trans-
Atlantic fl ights this summer, nearly
twice as many as Delta and United
 combined, according to Luton,
 England-based OAG, a provider of
 air travel information and applications.
 American could use growth in
 the trans-Atlantic, where it lags
competitors. In the fi rst quarter,
United reported $1.3 billion in Atlantic
 region passenger revenue,
while Delta reported $1.1 billion and
 American reported $673 million.
