At 200 year celebration

The Port Authority of New York and
New Jersey celebrated the 100th Anniversary
of the agency at the WTC grounds
with the PAPD Pipes and Drums Band,
and inspiring speeches of the history and
future of the Port.
Board of Commissioners Chairman
Kevin O’Toole shared a story about Walter
Hedden, the Port Consultant working
for the beloved Executive Director Justin
Tobin. In 1934 Hedden wrote a 40-page
manifest to the port staff about where the
young Port was going saying, “We need to
channel and harness a new force of technology
and make the port the gateway of
O’Toole echoed these words by saying,
“That’s what they said 78 years ago
and that is exactly what we are doing
here today. Today we are making this region
grow and grow. Look at enormity of
the Port: airways, runways, terminals,
bridges and buildings. It has succeeded
over the last 100 years because of the men
and women who have dedicated themselves
to this amazing organization. We
say thank you all for making it all happen
by the blood sweat and tears by all who
came before us. “
He proclaimed, “Port lived through
wars, 2 bombing and this pandemic. It
has been judged by how ithas endured
and reacted to that crisis. Port stands as
strong as ever in face of all these events.
We never anticipated the loss of revenue
due to the pandemic but we are better and
more resilient than ever because of our
men and women. It is astonishing.”
O’Toole said of the future of the Port.”
Don’t judge us on today but when they
open the time capsule in 2121. They will
wonder how this Port would have endured
for 200 years. I can’t imagine the technology
in 2121. We did not put a zip drive in
that little tube, since they wouldn’t know
what a zip drive is. “
He continued, “ We put mementos in
the capsule to remind future generations
what occurred here, a piece of steel, from
