STORY: Man shouts hate slurs at woman, then punches and leaves her
with broken spine in Forest Hills subway attack
SUMMARY: Cops need the public’s help in fi nding the man who
uttered anti-gay slurs and viciously assaulted a woman on board a
 subway train in Forest Hills.
REACH: 23,955 People Reached (as of 12/10/18)
earlier this year soliciting ideas for
improving and expanding ferry service in
the city, some in northeast Queens were
 skeptical.
Th e area is a notorious transportation
desert, served by just one subway line
(the 7 train, which ends at Flushing-
Main Street) and one commuter line (the
Long Island Rail Road’s Port Washington
branch). Anyone who doesn’t drive must
rely upon a local bus system that just isn’t
 fast enough.
Driving remains the best way to get
around in the area by default — but
 motorists face challenges from increased
congestion and too few parking spaces to
 meet the demand.
 Some, including Councilman Paul
Vallone, think adding ferry service to
northeast Queens will provide a viable
alternative for residents to get to and
from Manhattan every day. He urged residents
to participate in the EDC survey
 and make their voices heard.
 Th  e naysayers said it wouldn’t matter;
City Hall is too far away to care about
 helping commuters in northeast Queens.
But a funny thing happened: the city
EDC did listen to the northeast Queens
residents who participated in the survey.
Th e corporation informed Vallone on
Dec. 10 that it would consider the survey
results and study the possibility of introducing
ferry service at two pivotal points
in northeast Queens: Willets Point in
Flushing and Fort Totten in Bayside.
It’s far from being a done deal, but
it’s encouraging to see the same potential
we’ve seen for ferry service in northeast
 Queens.
Having ferry service to Willets Point
is essential for the community’s eventual
growth, and it would provide another
way for Flushing residents to cross the
East River without having to rely upon
the overcrowded 7 train every morning
 and evening.
A Fort Totten ferry would greatly benefi
t College Point and Whitestone residents,
as connecting to local rails requires
a lengthy bus or cab trip. Residents in
 northern Flushing, Bayside, Douglaston
and Little Neck would also have another
transportation option that they can rely
 upon for daily commuting.
We hope the EDC study confi rms the
desire we have for expanded ferry service
to northeast Queens. We also hope that it
proves to those skeptical of city government
that, in the end, making your voices
heard does indeed make the diff erence.
Th ere’s an old saying: If you don’t ask,
you don’t get. Northeast Queens asked for
a ferry; let’s hope they fi nally get it!
