Murderer sentenced
for 2016 slaying
A Jamaica man may be spending the
rest of his life in prison aft er being sentenced
on Dec. 11 for the 2016 murder
of a Jamaica Hills woman, prosecutors
announced.
Yonatan Galvez-Marin of Normal
Road received 25 years to life for killing
Nazma Khanam on the night of Aug.
31, 2016, according to Queens District
Attorney Richard A. Brown.
Khanam was walking on Normal
Road a few steps ahead of her husband
Shamul Alam Khan, when the defendant
suddenly approached her and demanded
money from the woman, according
to the Brown’s offi ce.
Law enforcement sources said that
Khanam refused to give the defendant
what he wanted and moments later was
stabbed once in the chest with a kitchen
knife, and Galvez-Marin fl ed, according
to the Brown’s offi ce. Khanam was later
rushed to a local hospital but ultimately
was pronounced dead.
On Sept. 3, 2016, detectives from the
NYPD apprehended Galvez-Marin at
the crime scene as they conducted an
investigation, according to Brown’s
offi ce. Galvez-Marin was convicted in a
jury trial within a week of second-degree
murder, attempted robbery, and criminal
possession of a weapon in October.
“Th is was a cowardly act of senseless
violence against an innocent, defenseless
woman. Th e defendant – a young
man in his early 20s – pounced on a
60-year-old woman as she walked in
Jamaica Hills on a warm summer night,”
Brown said.

Bayside
Man dead in house fi re
Police are investigating the death of
a man who was found dead aft er a fi re
broke out in his Bayside home last week.
Police responded to a 911 call regarding
a residential fi re in the basement of
56-07 East Hampton Blvd. on Dec. 6 at
9:58 p.m., according to authorities. Th e
FDNY responded to the location, deploying
12 units and 60 fi refi ghters to put out
the fi re.
Th e FDNY extinguished the fi re by 11
p.m. Offi cers from the 111th Precinct
then found 59-year-old Ismael Sylla in
the home, unconscious and unresponsive.
EMS arrived at the scene and declared
Sylla, who reports say was wheelchair
bound, dead at the scene. Th e
Medical Examiner will determine the
cause of death.
Th e cause of the fi re is currently under
investigation by the NYC Fire Marshal
and is ongoing.

Astoria
Fake utility workers dupe
senior into burglary
Police are looking for a duo who stole
money and jewelry from a senior woman’s
Astoria apartment back in October.
According to authorities, at 4 p.m. on
Oct. 22, two unknown men gained access
to an apartment in the vicinity of 29th
Street and 20th Avenue by posing as utility
workers to a 77-year-old woman.
Once inside, law enforcement sources
said, the impostors took an undetermined
amount of cash and jewelry. Th e suspects
then fl ed the scene on foot toward Astoria
Boulevard.
Police describe the suspects as 30-yearold
Hispanic men standing 5 feet, 7 inches
tall and weighing 130 pounds. Th e
NYPD released video of them on Dec. 6.
Th e fi rst suspect, who has brown hair,
was last seen wearing a black and gray
hooded sweater, blue jeans, black boots
and a dark baseball hat. Th e second suspect,
described as having brown eyes
and brown hair, was last seen wearing a
red and dark blue plaid hooded sweater,
dark pants, work boots, a blue New York
Yankees baseball hat.

Jackson Heights
Assailant punches 7
train rider after bump
Cops need the public’s help in fi nding
a man who punched out a victim who
bumped into him while boarding the 7
train in Jackson Heights.
According to police, at 3:50 p.m. on
Nov. 26, the 40-year-old male victim
was entering a Manhattan-bound 7 train
when he bumped into an unknown individual.
As the victim tried to apologize,
law enforcement sources said, the suspect
punched the victim in the face.
Th e assailant then fl ed the train at the
90th Street station. Police said that the
suspect dropped his phone as he fl ed.
Offi cers from the NYPD Transit Bureau
responded to the incident. Th e victim suffered
a laceration to the left ear as well
as swelling and bruising to his face; he
was treated and released from Elmhurst
Hospital.
In examining the dropped phone, cops
found the suspect’s image on the device
and released it on Dec. 10. Th e NYPD
described the perpetrator as a black man
standing 5 feet, 11 inches tall and weighing
160 pounds. He was last seen wearing
a black du-rag, a black jacket and black
sneakers.
