What you need to know for
Medicare open enrollment
The 2019 Medicare open
enrollment period is in full
swing through Dec. 7. Current
beneficiaries can switch plans,
and people turning 65 can
enroll three months before or
after their birthday, regardless
of open enrollment. Before
rushing to select a plan,
though, there are some pitfalls
that the Department for the
Aging’s Health Insurance
Information, Counseling and
Assistance Program can help
seniors avoid.
During the enrollment
period, HIICAP counselors
receive as many as 500 calls
a week. Many of these calls
are from newly eligible
Medicare beneficiaries who
find themselves overwhelmed
by the volume of mail they
suddenly receive from insurers
and brokers. Seniors should
definitely resist the urge to tune
out this “noise” because not
seeking help could leave them
without the coverage that best
meets their needs.
The Medicare plan options
are numerous and complicated.
For example, if you have
Original Medicare, you may
think you’re fully covered, but
you would be wrong. Medicare
covers most of your costs for
hospital (Part A) and medical
services (Part B), but you may
want to purchase a Medigap
plan to help pay deductibles
and co-payments. You can
also join a Medicare Advantage
plan (Part C) that provides
additional benefits for vision,
dental and hearing, and Part D
covers medications.
Beneficiaries should also
consider the state’s Elderly
Pharmaceutical Insurance
Coverage program, or EPIC,
which helps low-income and
middle-income seniors with outof
pocket Part D costs. Under
the federal Extra Help program,
Part D costs are also lowered. If
you cannot afford your Medicare
premiums, the Medicare Savings
Program may help.
For more information about
Medicare or help selecting the
right plan, call 311 and ask for
“HIICAP,” pronounced Hi-
CAP, to be connected with an
expert counselor.
