Assembly races
23rd Assembly District
Stacey Pheff er Amato
- Democratic
Stacey Pheff er Amato has
served as Assemblywoman
since 2017. In her current position,
she was selected to participate
in the 2017 National Early
Learning Fellowship with the
National Conference of State
Legislatures.
Prior to her service as
Assemblywoman, Pheffer
Amato worked for the NYC
Department of Education and
as a Procurement Specialist
for the FDNY and the NYC
Department of Sanitation.
Matthew G. Pecorino
- Republican
Matthew Pecorino has worked
for the New York State Senate
and currently serves as Budget
Director for City Councilman
Eric Ulrich.
In his current position,
Pecorino has worked towards
funding for school technology,
neighborhood beautification,
senior citizen service and educational
program projects.
Pecorino emphasizes low
taxes and a small government.
Pecorino is also a member of
the Howard Beach-Lindenwood
Civic Association and is active
in his parish church.
26th Assembly District
Edward C. Braunstein
- Democratic
Edward Braunstein has served
as Assemblyman for the 27th
District since 2011. He previously
worked as a Legislative Assistant
in the Assembly Speaker’s New
York City offi ce. Braunstein
has also served on Queens
Community Board 11 and was a
member of its Parks Committee
and Education Committee.
Braunstein is the chairman of
the Subcommittee on Trust and
Estates and is a member of the
Committees on Aging, Cities,
Health, Judiciary and Ways and
Means.
During his time as Assemblyman,
Braunstein introduced legislation
to cap increase on market value
for co-ops and condos, provide tax
relief to seniors and provide tax
credits for small business that hire
senior citizens.
David L. Bressler
- Republican
David Bressler is a regional
manager for Bimbo Bakeries
and president of the Bay Club.
Bressler was the treasurer of
the Bay Club Board of Managers
for fi ve years, and has been president
for three. He has been
with Bimbo Bakeries, a national
bakery conglomerate, for 18
years and has received several
awards for his performance.
Bressler is focused on fi xing
the district’s budget and taking
action on matters rather than
just talking about issues.

- 28th Assembly District
Andrew D. Hevesi
- Democratic
Andrew Hevesi has
been Assemblyman since
2005. Hevesi was served as
Chairman of the Committee
on Oversight, Analysis, and
Investigation, and is currently
Chairman of the Committee
on Social Services, and as a
member of the committees on
health, energy, insurance and
labor.
Hevesi is a lifelong resident
of the area, and obtained his
Bachelor of Arts degree in
Political Science from Queens
College.
Danniel S. Maio
- Republican
This is Danniel Maio’s
sixth attempt at politics, most
recently challenging Grace
Meng for the U.S. House of
Representatives in 2016. He
has never been elected to
office. Maio offers a personal
touch in his campaigning,
often going door to door to
learn what his potential constituents
are most concerned
with.

Assembly District
Brian T. Barnwell
- Democratic
Brian Barnwell has been
Assemblyman since 2017. He
defeated nine time incumbent
Margaret Markey in a huge
Democratic Primary upset,
and then Republican Tony
Nunziato by a wide margin in
the general election in 2016.
Barnwell was born in New
York City in 1986, and has
been a long time resident of
Woodside. He received his
Bachelor of Arts degree from
Arizona State University and
his law degree from Albany
Law School. During his time
in law school, Barnwell worked
for the Albany County District
Attorney’s Offi ce and for the
Albany Law School Civil Rights
and Disabilities Law Clinic. Aft er
graduating law school, Barnwell
went into private law practice.
Barnwell then worked as an aide
in Queens City Council Member
Costa Constantinides’s offi ce.
Eric J. Butkiewicz
- Republican
Eric Butkiewicz is a newcomer
to the political scene. He’s 22
years old, and currently studying
at St. John’s University Law
School. Butkiewicz grew up in
Middle Village and Maspeth,
and then attended Baruch
College. If elected, Butkiewicz
would be the youngest person in
the State Legislature.
Butkiewicz has said he’d like to
work both sides of the political
aisle. Butkiewicz would push the
MTA to be more effi cient, fi ght
against homeless shelter developments
and keep Rikers Island
open.
Butkiewicz was approached by
Republican community members
and encouraged to run for
offi ce.

Assembly - 33rd
Assembly District
Clyde Vanel - Democratic
Clyde Vanel has been
Assembly member of the
33rd District since December,
2016. Prior to his seat in the
Assembly, Vanel served as
Chief of Staff for State Senator
James Sanders Jr.
Vanel also practices business
law at The Vanel Law
Firm, owns the company that
manufactures Clean Bee shirt
collar protectors and owns
and operates the website
TrademarkReady.com. Vanel
formerly owned a restaurant
and bar in Lower Manhattan
called Vanel’s on First.
Vanel was born and raised
in Cambria Heights, with his
nine siblings.
Lalita L. Etwaroo
- Republican
Lalita Etwaroo migrated to
the United States from Guyana,
South America when she was 11
years old. She graduated John
Jay College with a Bachelors of
Sciences in Criminology and
Political Science and a Masters of
Public Administration with concentrations
in Human Resources
and Operations.
Prior to her studies in college,
she interned at the New
York State Assembly in 2012.
Etwaroo has lived in the 33rd
District for 15 years, and runs
a business owned by her parents.
Etwaroo believes politicians
too often work for their own
benefit, and not for their constituents.
Etwaroo has spent
the last several years working
towards getting to know her
community so she can better
serve them if she’s elected.
