We’ve been through this over and over
and over again: Las Vegas, Newtown,
Aurora, Orlando, Sutherland Springs,
Parkland, Columbine, Virginia Tech, and
so on and so forth.
And in all this time, with all this bloodshed,
Congress and this president have
done nothing to stop it. Th ey’ve done
nothing to keep assault rifl es, weapons of
war, out of the hands of the public.
If the people in charge won’t change,
then we must change the people in
charge.
All of us have the chance to do that —
this Tuesday, Nov. 6.
Let’s face the reality: the Republican
majority in Congress cannot and will not
support any new regulations on assault
rifl es. Th ey’ve off ered “thoughts and
prayers,” backed up with zero action. Th e
phrase “thoughts and prayers” has been
used so many times that it has become
a dark national punchline, symbolic of
their obstinance in the face of repeated,
easily preventable tragedy.
Moreover, too many Republicans have
a propensity not to stand up to this president
on much of anything.
It’s bad enough that they’ve turned
themselves into a rubber stamp for his
own agenda, but why won’t they do
anything beyond half-hearted condemnations
to reprimand this president,
who keeps using infl ammatory rhetoric
against immigrants, journalists, political
opponents?
Hours aft er the Pittsburgh tragedy, this
president was back at it on Twitter lying
about the press being “the enemy of the
American people” and echoing the far
right’s bogus warnings about an immigrant
caravan heading through Central
America. It’s this same kind of rhetoric
that inspired not only the Pittsburgh
shooter, but also Cesar Sayoc, the Florida
man who allegedly mailed pipe bombs to
former presidents Clinton and Obama,
CNN and prominent Democrats.
Trump won’t take any responsibility
for that, and at this point, no one’s
surprised. However, it’s troubling that
Republicans in Congress and beyond
refuse to condemn his autocratic language
in any meaningful way.
But there’s no hope of changing any of
this if we all stay home. You need to vote
this Tuesday as if the future of the country
depends on it — because it does.
Do we want a continuation of this sorry
status quo — or do we want to change the
way things are for the better?
Only you can answer that question, and
it takes a little walk to the polling place
and a few minutes out of your Tuesday
to do it.
And beyond Tuesday, we need to continue
to be proactive in the process and
push our elected offi cials to support a
renewed assault rifl e ban. If you don’t call
your local Member of Congress or the
Senate and tell them, they’re not going to
take any action.
Here’s a list of phone numbers for your
representatives on Capitol Hill. Call them
and make your voices heard!
