BY ROBERT POZARYCKI [email protected] @robbpoz Hoping to encourage future generations of children to “never forget,” a local lawmaker is proposing legislation allowing public schools to pause for reflection every Sept. 11. Assemblyman Phil Goldfeder drafted legislation creating the “September 11th Remembrance Day” at public schools across New York State, allowing educators to lead a “brief period of silence” allow for silent prayer or refl ection to honor the nearly 3,000 people who died in the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center, the Pentagon and United Airlines Flight 93. Goldfeder said he created the bill after speaking with many first responders and family members of attack victims in his district at various ceremonies marking the 14th anniversary of the attacks in September. According to the lawmaker, the firefighters and police officers expressed concern that today’s youth “were increasingly unaware of the tremendous loss and inspiring heroism of that day.” “For so many families in southern Queens and Rockaway, the sense of loss and pain that we feel each September 11th is still so strong,” Goldfeder said. “My bill will ensure that students in New York have the chance to learn about September 11th and appreciate what it means to everyone that lived through this defining moment in our nation’s history.” One local firefighter — Dan Mundy Jr., a FDNY battalion chief and president of the Broad Channel Civic Association — agreed that a moment of silence in public schools on Sept. 11 would be an appropriate tribute to those who died in the attacks. “Currently, this is just another day in the school year that passes without any mention made of its importance,” Mundy said. “It should be unacceptable to New Yorkers that our next generation would not understand the significance of that day in history and to this city.” Great rates like ours are always in season. 18-Month CD 1.15%APY* At Flushing Bank, we’re small enough to know you and large enough to provide you with the great rates you’re looking for.
