The link between oral health
and seniors’ overall health
October is National Dental
Hygiene Month – a time when
we should all evaluate our oral
health. Still, many people think
this issue only concerns children
and younger adults, but it can have
a major impact on healthy aging.
Tooth loss only increases with age,
and about 1 in 4 adults over age
65 has no remaining natural teeth.
We also see many older adults
developing cavities, commonly
caused by dry mouth from
medications or dehydration,
and nearly 70 percent of older
Americans suffer from gum
disease, according to the
Centers for Disease Control
and Prevention. Other common
problems include root decay and
inadequate care of dentures.
Though overlooked, oral health
is just as important as heart health.
Having healthy teeth can impact
general nutrition, including the
ability to properly chew, swallow
and digest food; self-image; social
interactions; mental health; and
overall physical well-being. The
American Dental Association
advises older adults to brush and
floss daily, clean their dentures
daily, drink water with fluoride,
and quit smoking. Seniors are
also encouraged to make regular
preventive visits to a dentist or
dental hygienist.
Despite the recommendations,
one-third of older Americans have
not visited a dentist within the past
year, according to some surveys.
Lower-income older adults are even
less likely to visit the dentist. The
situation is only worsened by the
fact that some seniors lack coverage.
Unfortunately, Medicare usually
doesn’t cover routine dental care,
but coverage is typically available
through Medicare Advantage plans.
New York State offers limited dental
coverage through Medicaid. For
people without dental coverage, care
may be available by buying a private
insurance plan through the state’s
health marketplace or a discounted
plan directly from an insurer.
Some dentists and dental
students also offer free or low-cost
services at community health and
dental clinics or at local senior
centers. You can also visit Oral
Health America’s toothwisdom.org
website to find affordable dental
care near you.
