Makers and DIY-enthusiasts from
across the country gathered in Flushing
Meadows Corona Park for a weekend of
making and breaking.
On Sept. 22-23, the ninth annual World
Maker Faire returned to Queens with a
weekend of invention, creativity and curiosity.
Th ousands of people gathered at the
New York Hall of Science for the two-day
event, including over 1,000 makers from
across the country.
Th roughout the weekend, participants
were encouraged to make, break and get
to the bottom of how things work through
interactive workshops, games and panel
talks. From robots and DIY robocars to
large versions of classic arcade and board
games, there was something for everyone
at World Maker Faire New York.
One of the featured exhibits at World
Maker Faire New York this year was the
Hand of Man. Built by Christian Ristow,
the 26-foot-long interactive sculpture
uses hydraulics to pick up and crush cars.
With shows running throughout each
day, audience members were encouraged
to hop into the Hand of Man’s driver seat
and try it out.
Many of the exhibits included activities
where participants could bring home
a souvenir made onsite with the latest
technological tools. One section of the
grounds was completely dedicated to 3-D
printing and many stations hosted workshops
where participants could bring
home their very own 3-D-printed object.
World Maker Faire New York also
embraced pop culture, cosplay and the
props and animatronics that bring movies
and television series to life.
In addition to the number of interactive
exhibits, World Maker Faire New
York hosted many shows and educational
panels ranging from the classic Coke and
Mentos science experiment taken to the
next level (hosted by EepyBird) to panels
discussing how to get girls more interested
in STEM fi elds.
Adam Savage, former host of the popular
show “Mythbusters,” also made an
appearance, hosting a panel with the stars
of his new show “Mythbusters Jr.,”which
will premiere on the Science Channel.
