Familiar face in Whitestone
opens sweet new business

With its fi rst year in the books, a new
Whitestone business owned by a familiar
face is already building a reputation as
one of the sweetest spots in town.
In fact, inside Shake ‘n Swirl at the
Whitestone Plaza along 154th Street,
a customer could be overheard telling
owner Jimmy Coady that it was by far
her favorite frozen yogurt spot in the
area when QNS stopped by in August.
According to Coady, also the owner of the
popular pizzeria Cascarino’s next door,
the reason for the early success of his new
venture is his attention to detail.
“You really have to clean these yogurt
machines, and a lot of places aren’t,”
Coady said. “I’m a big fanatic, even in my
restaurant, with rotating everything and
keeping things fresh.”
Shake ‘n Swirl opened in September
2017 and its crystal clean environment is
fi lled with vibrant shades of blue, orange
and pink. Th e musical notes in its logo
also appear throughout the interior
design to go along with its slogan, “Where
Frozen Treats & Music Meet.” On the
walls behind the counter, two fl at-screen
televisions play music videos from a wide
variety of genres throughout the day.
Coady explained that the infl uence of
the Landrum School of Performing Arts
contributed in part to his musical theme,
as hundreds of local kids have attended
the school and many of them have
worked in Cascarino’s and now at Shake
‘n Swirl. But the idea really came to fruition
when Coady went on a trip to
Columbia and came across a bar that also
played music videos inside.
“Th ere’s no MTV. Th ere’s no VH1 anymore.
It’s all reality shows,” Coady said.
“Th e kids come in here, I put on the pop,
they’re dancing and singing ... you have to
see how many people sit here and watch
the videos.”
Shake ‘n Swirl has also quickly evolved
into more than just a frozen yogurt shop,
and it’s proving to be the perfect complement
to the pizzeria, Coady said. Along

with the 18 fl avors of frozen yogurt and
more than 50 toppings, including some
vegan and gluten-free options, the shop
now off ers Italian ice, fresh smoothies,
shakes, acai bowls and coff ee.
One of its most unique features is free
delivery, and patrons of Cascarino’s will
oft en ask for frozen yogurt to be delivered
along with their pizza, Coady said.
Th e combination has even led to a boost
in the pizzeria’s business.
Coady also takes pride in keeping his
prices lower than other frozen yogurt
cafes in town in large part because he
isn’t paying a franchise fee to be part of
a corporate chain such as Red Mango.
He also plans to incorporate even more
products going forward to help keep the
year-round business attractive even in the
winter when people may not want frozen
treats. Up next on his menu is a full juice
bar, Coady said.
Amidst his fanatic nature for running
his businesses, however, Coady’s childlike
love for ice cream is the cherry on top.
“What’s better than ice cream?” Coady
said. “I love ice cream. My family’s been
making fun of me since I was a kid. I
could eat six pints a week.”
Shake ‘n Swirl is open Monday through
Friday from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m., and
Friday and Saturday from 11 a.m. to 11
p.m.
