during the Finals weekend at
the U.S. Open on Sept. 8-9 at the Billie
Jean King National Tennis Center in
Flushing Meadows Corona Park. Most of
the controversy, as well reported in recent
days, centered around the Women’s Final
match between Serena Williams and
Naomi Osaka. Fans jeered the umpire
who calling Williams for multiple code
violations, and the jeers grew more
intense aft er the umpire called a game
penalty against Williams aft er she threw
her racket to the court in frustration.
Th e controversial calls put a damper on
Osaka’s straight sets win over Williams,
6-2, 6-4, giving the Japanese player her
fi rst ever Grand Slam tournament victory.
In a rather anticlimactic Men’s Final,
Novak Djokovic — who missed last year’s
Open — recaptured his glory with a
straight sets win over Juan Martin del
Potro, 6-3, 7-6, 6-3. It was Djokovic’s 14th
Grand Slam title.
Tens of thousands packed into Arthur
Ashe Stadium on both days to witness
the crowning matches of the two-week
tournament. Among the spectators were
numerous celebrities including Alec
Baldwin and Pierce Brosnan.
