Queens high school player wins ‘Miss New York Basketball’

A rising basketball star from a Jamaica
Estates school is the recipient of a top
statewide award.
Jordan Nixon, a senior at Th e Mary
Louis Academy, has been awarded
“2018 Miss New York Basketball” by the
Basketball Coaches Association of New
York. In the fall, she is headed to the
University of Notre Dame, where she will
continue her women’s basketball career.
Nixon, a point guard for Th e Mary
Louis Hilltoppers, was chosen for the
award aft er two rounds of voting and
deliberations by association and media
members. Th e title is widely viewed as
the top award that a high school basketball
player in New York state can receive.
In January, the high school senior was
selected to play in the 2018 McDonald’s
All-American game, joining the ranks
of basketball legends such as Michael
Jordan, Kobe Bryant and Candace
Parker.
Th is year’s team members were selected
from over 700 nominees hailing from
schools throughout the country. Th e
game took place on March 28 at the
Philips Arena in Atlanta and was aired
live on ESPN2.
Nixon has also been nominated for
Gatorade Player of the Year, the All-USE
Team and the All-USA Player of the Year
Awards.
Th e point guard is ranked as the nation’s
top wing and the No. 15 point guard in
the Class of 2018, according to ESPN.
Th is season, the Hilltoppers advanced
to the varsity semifi nals of the Brooklyn-
Queens Diocesan Championship, where
they were defeated by St. Francis Prep.
Last year, fellow Hilltopper Danielle
Patterson was selected to play on the 2017
McDonald’s All American Girls Team.
Patterson, a forward, currently plays for
Notre Dame; the team is currently competing
in the NCAA women’s basketball
tournament as the top seed in the
Spokane Region.

During halft ime of the NYCFC match
against Orlando City SC on March
17, the Patriots of Francis Lewis were
brought out onto the fi eld to be recognized
for their accomplishment. Th e
Patriots capped off an undefeated (17-
0) season with a 4-2 victory in the
championship game against Beacon
High School in November of 2017.
It was a rematch and a chance for
redemption, as Beacon defeated Francis
Lewis for the PSAL championship the
previous year.
