St. Francis Prep Mounts Spring Musical, “High School Musical”
Fresh Meadows - - On April 13th, 14, and 15th, the Alvernian Drama Society of St.
Francis Prep will be present its annual spring musical. This year’s production will be the
timeless classic, “The Wizard of Oz.” This production, according to Prep’s long-time
Director of the Alvernian Drama Society, and veteran faculty member, Donna Mejia,
features a lot more dancing than audience members might be used to, including the
jitterbug, swing, tap, and ballet. The jitterbug comes from a deleted scene in the 1939
movie. Students dancing ballet will be representing snowflakes in the poppy field scene.
These are not the only changes and updates. Munchkinland will be infused by Hip-Hop
and Rap. And in this production, the witch even sings.
As in years past, this production, from beginning to end is inclusive in terms of who is
involved. Mejia’s Theater design and Production class has been doing quite a bit of
painting for sets, and designing and building props. There are even parents getting
involved such as fathers Kevin Lee, SFP class of 1984, Bill Langan, and Carlos Berlanga,
who have been spending weekends building sets. There’s a big cast and crew, with
students from all four grade levels. One of those students is Samantha Berlanga (Carlos’
daughter), who has been in all eight stage productions in her time at Prep.
Prep students Zoe Mitchel as Glinda and Samantha Berlanga as the Wicked Witch
Tickets are $12 for adults, and $5 for students and seniors. They are available in Prep’s
Art office at Prep, or at the door before each performance.
The dates are Friday, April 13th at 8PM, Saturday, April 14th at 7PM, and Sunday, April
15th at 2PM at St. Francis Prep’s Brother Ralph Clifford Memorial Auditorium, located at
6100 Francis Lewis Boulevard in Fresh Meadows, Queens.

THE SCHOOLS OF SAINT MARY
At The Schools of Saint Mary, Manhasset, students in Nursery through Grade
12 flourish in an innovative and nurturing educational environment rooted in
Catholic values. Small class sizes foster a more personal connection between
students and faculty. Faculty and administrators at St. Mary's strive to educate the
whole child – intellectually, spiritually, emotionally, socially and physically.
The use of cutting edge technology, including campus-wide wireless
capabilities, an online system that allows students and parents to access
homework and grades, and school-issued iPads for every student in sixth through
twelfth grade, helps teachers provide students with a strong academic foundation.
In the science lab, St. Mary's students work collaboratively and learn about
science, technology, engineering and math through a STEM education. Middle
and high school students gain an appreciation for the arts and develop their
creativity through participation in the Fine and Performing Arts Program, with
classes in art, chorus, band, orchestra, dance or stage performance; performing
arts students learn from and work alongside professionals in those fields, thanks
to St. Mary's collaboration with The Josephine Foundation. The Schools of St.
Mary is also proud of its competitive athletics programs, which are highly
regarded for both excellent coaching and superb sportsmanship.
From the early childhood students to high school seniors, The Schools of Saint
Mary is preparing inspired thinkers and creative leaders.
