FEATURES Times Newsweekly Community Profiles • Local History • Nightlife • Food Reviews • Neighborhood Events And Memories by Robert Pozarycki With the holidays nearing, two local churches opened an emergency food pantry in Glendale to feed the hungry through at least the end of the year. Operated by the United Presbyterian Church of Ridgewood and Trinity Lutheran Church in Middle Village, the pantry is open on Thursday and Friday from 1 to 4 p.m. at the former Ascension Lutheran Church, located at 78-15 78th St. United Presbyterian Pastor Henry Fury and Trinity Lutheran Pastor Leo Longan are providing donated food to local residents in need, according to Alice Lucente, a Trinity Lutheran member involved in the effort. Ascension Lutheran closed its doors to worshippers three years ago and is now owned by Trinity Lutheran, which is looking to sell the property. The pantry, which previously operated out of Ridgewood, relocated there last week, Pastor Fury told the Times Newsweekly on Tuesday, Nov. 18. The pantry received a “respectable response” the first two days of operation in Glendale, Fury noted. Packages of non-perishable food items— including canned goods, pasta and cereal—were provided to needy residents. Donations are always welcome, and those interested in supporting the pantry are invited to bring non-perishable items to Sunday services at United Presbyterian, which is now located at Covenant Lutheran Church at the corner of Catalpa Avenue and 60th Lane in Ridgewood; and Trinity Lutheran Church, located at the corner of Penelope Avenue and Dry Harbor Road. Services at United Presbyterian begin at 11:30 a.m. and at Trinity Lutheran at 10:30 a.m. 19 • TIMES, THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 20, 2014 Food Pantry Opens For Glendale Needy ‘State Of Health’ Back Open For Enrollments NNeeww FFeeaattuurreess TToo EEaassee PPllaann SShhooppppiinngg “With more than 960,000 New Yorkers enrolled in the first open enrollment period, NY State of Health has proven to be an extremely successful program that is well on its way to exceeding the goal of insuring more than one million people by 2016,” said acting State Health Commissioner Dr. Howard Zucker. “The past year has provided us with numerous insights on how to build upon the program’s achievements in the upcoming open enrollment period.” Last year, during its first open enrollment period, nearly one million New Yorkers enrolled in health insurance coverage through NY State of Health. Premium rates for 2015 plans will continue to be more than 50 percent lower than they were prior to the establishment of the Marketplace, with nearly 75 percent of the people enrolled getting financial assistance to help further lower their monthly costs. “Greater outreach efforts will to be our primary focus as we continue to build upon our enrollment success from year one,” added Donna Frescatore, executive director of NY State of Health. “Giving people additional opportunities to experience the benefits of the NY State of Health marketplace with its affordability and high-quality health insurance coverage will lead to more enrollments and a healthier New York in more ways than one.” This year’s open enrollment began on Saturday, Nov. 15 and runs through Feb. 15, 2015 and offers new initiatives that were spurred by the input from NY Veterans Ceremony Remembers Sacrifice Over 200 seniors celebrated Veterans Day in Ridgewood with 20 Peter Cardella Senior Center members who served in WWII, Korea and Vietnam on Tuesday Nov. 11.
