STOLE FROM VET TRIBUTE Memorial Wreath Theft Riles Woodhaven by Robert Pozarycki Two unpatriotic thieves swiped a memorial wreath and several American flags from the Woodhaven World War II memorial last weekend, it was reported. Maria Thomson, executive director of the Greater Woodhaven Development Corporation (GWDC), told the Times Newsweekly the items were reported missing from the memorial at Forest Parkway Plaza, at the corner of Jamaica Avenue and Forest Parkway, at about 10 p.m. Sunday night, Nov. 16. The exact time of when the wreath and flags were taken was not immediately known. Thomson is hopeful images of the suspects captured by nearby security cameras released to the press will help lead to their arrests. According to Thomson, the artificial wreath—covered in red, white and blue ribbon—was placed at the monument in May during the GWDC’s annual Memorial Day ceremony. Traditionally, the wreath and flags remain on display throughout the year before being replaced at the following year’s ceremony. Agency Linked To Howard Beach Caper Still wanted for robbing a Howard Beach travel agency earlier this month, the perpetrators pictured above are believed to be responsible for another travel agency heist, this time in Ozone Park, last Wednesday, Nov. 12, police reported. by Robert Pozarycki Gunslingers who allegedly tied up workers and swiped cash from a Howard Beach travel agency this month are believed to be responsible for a similar holdup in Ozone Park last Wednesday morning, Nov. 12, police reported. Law enforcement sources said the two suspects struck the Crown Travel Agency at 103-49 118th St., off Liberty Avenue, at 11 a.m. that day. According to police, the incident bore a striking resemblance to the Nov. 7 holdup at the Liberty Travel office at 156-40 Cross Bay Blvd. In that caper, authorities said, the perpetrators bound six employees with zip-ties and demanded to know the location of the safe. They reportedly managed to open the safe and steal an undisclosed amount of money, as well as the victims’ property. Regarding last Wednesday’s heist, law enforcement agents stated, the crooks—one of whom brandished a gun—walked into the location and restrained two female employees with zip-ties. Thereafter, police said, they demanded that the employees open the safe, but after an attempt, the workers were unable to comply with the demand. Reportedly, the crooks then stole an undetermined amount of cash left inside a tin case as well as jewelry and the victims’ jewelry and cash. Seconds later, police noted, the perpetrators fled the scene in an unknown direction. Officers from the 106th Precinct responded to the scene after receiving a 911 call about the incident. There were no reported injuries. City Council Bill Targets Unlawful Collection Bins Imposes Fines On Clothing Racket by Noah Zuss The City Council passed legislation last Thursday, Nov. 13, to increase fines for owners of illegal clothing collection bins that have popped up all over the city on public property, and to give the Sanitation Department authority to remove them immediately, it was announced. The measure, Intro. 409-A, establishes civil penalties of $250 for the first offense and $500 for each subsequent violation within 18 months for the placement of publicly accessible collection bins on city property, and doubles those penalties if attached to city property, according to a statement. The legislation additionally allows the Sanitation Department to immediately remove any bins illegally placed on public property, it was noted. Previously, the Sanitation Department was only authorized to remove the collection bins 30 days after posting a notice. Lawmakers claimed the tougher penalties were needed because owners could skirt a violation by merely relocating the bins to another public location within the timeframe to avoid a violation, it was noted. -SEE BIN ON PG. 27- The two suspects who allegedly swiped the memorial wreath from the Woodhaven World War II monument last weekend. -SEE TRAVEL ON PG. 27-
