Nearly 70 years ago, a boy named Donald John Trump resided on a quiet residential street in affl uent Jamaica Estates. He would grow up in the footsteps of his father to become a real estate mogul. Trump would go on to become a casino magnate, later a celebrity and, now, the next president of the United States. Trump left Queens behind long ago for a luxury tower bearing his name in Manhattan. His rhetoric on the campaign trail over the last two years seemed to refl ect something that is the total opposite of the values that make Queens great -- tolerance, acceptance of foreigners, civility, respect for all. On Election Day, as he routed in states that no one expected he would win, he didn’t win his home state of New York, and didn’t win a single Assembly district in his native borough. Whether Queens voters like it or not, Donald Trump is going to be our nation’s new leader as of Jan. 20, 2017. There are plenty of people who worry about the nation’s future. They’re worried if, among so many things, Trump would fulfi ll the pledges he made to build a wall on the border with Mexico, round up illegal immigrants en masse and throw them out, ban Muslims from entering the country, completely scrap Obamacare without replacing it, gut Social Security and other entitlements. If Trump is to be a truly successful president, he must start by respecting the offi ce which he is about to enter, to uphold the democratic process and the rule of law without abusing it. He must also treat people with respect and adopt the values of his home borough. The American people have given him the Oval Office, and now it’s time for that “presidential” Trump to emerge at long last. The offi ce of the presidency has the reputation of changing anyone who occupies it. Will he turn out to be a dynamic force of change, or will the offi ce expose him as not being up to the task? We will soon fi nd out. This newspaper wishes our new president well. We’re counting on him, as with other presidents in past elections, to do a great job for us all.
