WWW.QNS.COM RIDGEWOOD TIMES SEPTEMBER 3, 2020 21
My old friend Maureen Walters. Maureen was
always an active community individual. She and
I both sat on Community Board 5 and she was
very caring about our neighborhood . Many
times if it was late I would drive her home. I was
a major advertiser of the Times Newsweekly.
Weekly taking the back page for many years.
Maureen always recognised me in the paper for
all I did for the community, starting a Local
Development Corp. and and a Business
Improvement District. Running a holiday tree
lighting ceremony and a horse drawn Santa
Parade, and many other events. Always
published pictures of our annual meetings .
When I bought the 100 year old Dietz Coal Co.
and built Ridgewood's first condominium , 65
apt’s. She was also very helpful with her
editorials. When I had to collect money from
fellow merchants for Christmas lights , she
always gave us positive praising press.
I remember her positive attitude and her
smiling face.
She was a caring Team Player and a good friend.
I will truly miss her. May she rest in peace.
Herman (HY) Hochberg
I will miss my friend and colleague Maureen Walthers.
As publisher of the Ridgewood Times, she promoted and helped rescue
local journalism - and used its excellent reputation and hers to advance a
long list of community causes – from Onderdonk House and Myrtle
Avenue to Fresh Pond Road and Benninger Park.
She had a big heart and always fought for the underdog – with an
unwavering dedication to helping people. I remember our many projects
together, including our fight against illegal dumping at Cypress Hills
Cemetery, and our first joint undertaking, when we helped to secure a
medal for a veteran that was long overdue.
I will miss this most inspiring woman – a role model and mentor to me –
who had a great sense of style, a warm sense of humor and
non-stop dedication to the
Greater Ridgewood community.
Deepest sympathies from me, my family and my staff to Maureen's
family (including her daughter Patti – my classmate at Grover Cleveland),
her friends and the greater Ridgewood community.
With love and reverence,
Assemblymember Catherine Nolan
