The hip afternoon-into-evening party features DJs spinning pop hits and a legendary dance floor. Every last weekend day this summer they’ve transformed the normally desolate stretch on Cooper Avenue between Wyckoff and Irving avenues into a party zone. Out front, there are designated check-ins, sectioned-off lines and plentiful security. Inside, a cork dance floor awaits and DJs bounce beats, while kids and dogs have space to play in the grass. After almost five years running these parties, the head honchos Mister Sunday party at Nowadays in Ridgewood is a can’t-miss affair at Mister Sunday know how to run a tight ship. Not only are the duo behind the party — Justin Carter and Eamon Harkin — well-known DJs on their own, but they are also two out of three owners of Nowadays itself. The party stemmed off of the equally iconic party Mister Saturday Night, which began in 2012. Since then, Mister Sunday has come into its own as more than a spinoff, acting as a gathering that’s focused on community and diversity. They describe the party as “a Sunday afternoon party for all ages and all walks of life.” Sunday’s party was just as described. Children ran about the grassy knolls of the venue while old-timers found a rhythm besides 20-something counterparts on the dance floor. The party has a strict “no cameras or phone on the floor” policy, making it difficult for photographers at the event, but encouraging dancers to let loose. They also installed a special cork dance floor, adding a little spring to even the wildest dance moves. Food and drink are necessary to fuel a dance party, and Mister Sunday was prepared for the masses. A unique highlight of the party is the custom “Mister Sunday Session Lager,” a smooth encapsulation of the refreshing vibe of the party. Snacks like grilled cheese and huaraches were popular with families huddled around picnic tables. Groups of fashion-forward friends huddled under ponchos and umbrellas but didn’t let the drizzle rain on their parade; even as the rain poured down, more and more party-goers fl ocked to the fl oor. All of the above adds up to a fun and memorable Sunday afternoon, and though summer’s end is soon, you still have time to catch Mister Sunday in action! The party runs every Sunday through Oct. 22, and you can score $10 early bird tickets now by visiting https://www.residentadvisor.net/dj/eamonharkin.
