Tree lightings, Santa appearances, hot chocolate and carolers welcomed the holiday season in neighborhoods such as Bayside, Middle Village, Glendale and Whitestone. DRUG BUST Big bundles of dollar bills and an assortment of illegal drugs were recovered by detectives who raided a St. Albans home on the morning of Dec. 1. Detectives found more than $41,000 in cash; various quantities of heroin, marijuana and cocaine; drug paraphernalia; a loaded, .40-caliber Taurus fi rearm; and a bulletproof vest. 38-year-old Nelson Donigan was charged with multiple counts of criminal possession of a weapon, criminal possession of marijuana and criminal possession of a fi rearm. STUDENT SIT-IN Unhappy with their acting principal, students at Townsend Harris High School in Flushing organized and staged a protest on the aft ernoon of Dec. 8 looking for change. Individual students from all grade levels of the school located at 149-11 Melbourne Ave. held a sit-in at their school on Dec. 8 asking that interim principal Rosemarie Jahoda not be considered for a permanent position. Authored by “Stop Jahoda” and addressed to the Department of Education (DOE), a petition cited “rumors of numerous instances of faculty harassment, signifi cant changes to programs and course off erings without input from the faculty and SLT, and as time has passed, less parent engagement” among the concerns. HATEFUL GRAFFITI AT MASPETH PLAYGROUND In one of several incidents of hateful graffi ti found in Queens, four derogatory and hateful messages were found spray painted on the fl oor inside Reiff Playground, located at 59th Drive between Fresh Pond Road and 63rd Street, by a parkgoer just aft er midnight on Wednesday, Nov. 30. Th e anti-Semitic and anti-police messages allegedly read “F—k the Jew,” “show money” and “F—k the Police,” along with a swastika, while money symbols and hearts were found spray painted inside the handball courts.
