58 THE QUEENS COURIER • WELLNESS • SEPTEMBER 17, 2015 FOR BREAKING NEWS VISIT www.queenscourier.com wellness Yoga teacher helps de-stress in the workplace BY ROBERT POZARYCKI editorial@queenscourier.com @robbpoz Stress comes naturally to anyone who works in a deadline-driven, competitive environment — which makes fi nding the time to de-stress all the more important. To help its workers keep their stress at bay, The Courier recently brought in yoga expert Nina Yousefzadeh for a chair yoga session, teaching employees ways to stay fi t and relax without having to get up. During the 30-minute session, Yousefzadeh led employees in exercises focused on breathing and stretching from their seats, getting them to slow their heart rate and forget (or, at the very least, diminish) any stressful issues before them. She closed the session by having everyone s close their eyes and focus on a personal goal they may have, then imagining their feelings upon reaching that goal. Yousefzadeh, who is also a pharmacist for a local hospital’s emergency department, understands the toll stress can take physically, mentally and emotionally. “I knew that I needed something to help me relax, de-stress and help me have clarity and calmness of mind,” she said. Her prior practice of yoga and her pursuit of relaxation convinced Yousefzadeh to travel to India in March, where she obtained her certifi cation in teaching yoga and learned that it isn’t “about how fl exible you are or how long or deep you can hold the poses.” “Yoga means union. Through the different poses and breathing exercises, yoga connects the body, mind and soul,” she said. “Most anxiety, stress and depression comes from thinking about the past, or worrying about the future. Through yoga and mindfulness, we are only focusing on our breath and the present moment, which is beautiful.” She added that many national companies have incorporated yoga into their environments to help build teamwork, enhance creativity, increase communication and resolve confl icts that may arise, thus leading to greater productivity.
