Between the constant deadlines, the offi ce politics and lack of job security it is hard to focus. Are there ways to deal with this type of stress? Stressed in Queens Dear Stressed, It is no wonder that you are feeling stressed! Deadlines, offi ce politics and budget cuts are common in the workplace, and the result is increased fear, uncertainty, and higher levels of stress. While you can’t prepare for every stressful encounter, there are things you can do to lower your stress levels. Here are a few tips: Prioritize and Organize: Make a list of tasks you have to do, and complete them in order of importance. Do the high-priority items fi rst. If a large project seems overwhelming, make a step-by-step plan. Focus on one manageable step at a time, rather than taking on everything at once. When the unexpected request occurs, you will be able to add it to your task list in the proper priority. Take Time Off: When stress is mounting at work, try to take a quick break to remove yourself from the situation. Take a walk around the building or go to the break room. Don’t forget to use your days off to replenish your energy. Connect With Others: Developing relationships with friends and colleagues can help provide a safe outlet for your feelings. Speaking with someone you trust can help you remain calm and focused. Take Care of Yourself: Build time for exercise into your daily routine. Exercising can lift your mood, increase energy and sharpen focus. Make sure to get enough sleep. When you’re well-rested, it’s much easier to keep your emotional balance and cope with workplace stress. Make Healthy Food Choices: Healthy eating habits can help you get through stressful work days while keeping your energy high. Keep a supply of fruit and nuts at your desk for healthy snacking. Realize When You Are Stressed: Recognize when you become stressed and become familiar with techniques that will quickly calm and energize you. Some people prefer to meditate while other prefer a brisk walk. Each person responds differently to stress, so it’s important to fi nd the things that work best for you. Don’t ignore the warning signs of stress. The better you are at managing your own stress, the more you’ll positively affect those around you, and the less other people’s stress will negatively affect you.
