Christ the King doesn’t lose nine games. But we have a certain level that we hold ourselves to and not getting to Albany was a disappointment.” OK. Let’s get the disappointment of the way. The Lady Royals didn’t win the state championship. They did win the Brooklyn/Queens Division I title, 96-71 over Bishop Loughlin at St. John’s Prep. It was their third straight Diocesan title and the 29th overall. And four players will go to college on full academic scholarships. So much for disappointing. “That’s what I’m really proud of,” Mackey said. “Our athletes are students fi rst. That’s the way it will always be. When basketball helps further their education, that’s great.” Here are the Christ the King players who are going to Division I schools on scholarship: ASHLIE HOWELL — No one can ever question Howell’s commitment to the game and her determination to become the best player she can be. Howell commuted to Middle Village every day from the Bronx in order to face better competition and be pushed every day. The 6-3 center signed with St. Peter’s College, where Mackey sees a great opportunity. “She’s going to make a difference,” Mackey said. “You don’t fi nd a lot of 6-3 centers in the MAAC. Ashlie is a tireless worker who turned herself into the player she is with her hard work.” KAELA KINDER — Kinder was the dominant defensive force in the win over Bishop Loughlin. She also scored 20 points. “When she transferred in as a sophomore, she was pure, raw talent,” Mackey said. “She improved so much and became such a polished player. If she didn’t land wrong the fi rst day of practice and break her ankle, there’s no telling how great a season she would have had. But she came back strong and I think she’ll fi t in great at Virginia Tech.” DOMINIQUE TOUSSAINT — Toussaint scored 26 points in the title game but pick a sport, almost any sport, and Toussaint can star. In addition to basketball, she excelled at track and soccer. She and Kinder will continue to see a lot of each other. Toussaint, the Gatorade State Player of the Year, is headed to Virginia. “She has a great personality,” Mackey said. “She’s a real easy-going kid. Her parents are terrifi c people who understand what’s important in life. It explains why she’s the defi nition of a student-athlete.” SYDNEY ZAMBROTTA — Zambrotta stored 21 points in the title game, an impressive feat. But Zambrotta was born to score. She scored more than 2,000 points in her high school career including a Long Island record 63 when she played at North Babylon before transferring to Christ the King. “She sees the fl oor and has great balance. Her strength is playing fast. She’s a great kid. She can be a little goofy, which is going to make for an interesting transition at Louisville because Coach Jeff Walz doesn’t mess around. But Syd knows when to be serious and she makes the players around her better.” 1Student Banking is available for personal accounts only and is free of maintenance and activity fees. 2Student Checking Accounts with a Visa® debit card are automatically enrolled in the Even >more Rewards Program.
