Remembering a ragtime legend at East Elmhurst concert Photos by George Spence Ragtime sounds filled the air at St. Michael’s Cemetery in East Elmhurst during the annual Scott Joplin tribute concert on May 21. This year’s concert featured a special performance by Vince Giordano and His Night Hawks, a jazz orchestra best known for performing much of the soundtrack for the HBO series “Boardwalk Empire.” Among the guests in attendance was author Edward A. Berlin, who wrote a biography on Scott Joplin. The famous ragtime composer, whose work was highlighted in the 1973 movie “The Sting,” died in April 1917 and later interred at St. Michael’s Cemetery. FOR PERSONALIZED SERVICE AND EXPERTISE By Suzanne Monteverdi editorial@qns.com @QueensCourier Forty years ago, Charles Cestaro built the foundation for what would become one of the tri-state area’s leading janitorial cleaning companies with a floor waxing machine and a plan. As an Italian-American teenager living in the Bronx, Cestaro took on part-time summer employment as a window cleaner. Unbeknownst to him, this experience would spark what would grow into a lifelong career. At 19 years old, Cestaro borrowed $200 from his father to invest in a floor waxing machine. Servco Industries had begun. “I solicited door to door through the Bronx neighborhoods BUSINESS in the NEWS looking for cleaning and janitorial opportunities to work for local business that required cleaning services,” Cestaro said. His hard work paid off. Today, his business Servco Industries now employs more than 300 professional cleaners, services a wide variety of locations, and offers a huge selection of services. “Servco Industries has come a long way over the 40-year journey,” Cestaro said. “Today, we work for organizations such as Sears, Sports Authority, Marshalls, Kmart, Upper Manhattan Mental Health, FAO Schwarz and Toys R Us cleaning millions of square feet of office and retail space each and every day.” Operating out of an office in the Bronx, Servco Ind. services buildings of all sizes throughout NYC and the tri-state area, offering general office cleaning and building maintenance, floor and carpet care and restoration, lavatory sanitation, window cleaning, porter and matron services, medical and AORN operating room cleaning, and much more. For Cestaro, what makes Servco stand out is its personalized approach to each customer’s specific needs. “We manage our clients differently,” he said. “We don’t wait for issues to develop and then try to remedy them.” This proactive approach is achieved through monthly customized quality control reports, as well as client access to knowledgeable field operation managers. Cestaro is also firmly committed to always finding the newest, most innovative way of providing service. “Our mission statement is to constantly stay in pace with technology and its positive impact on the service industry,” Cestaro said. “The nuances of computers, software and equipment have revalorized production rates. Today, we can do more and produce more work, creating greater efficiency.” All estimates and proposals are without obligation.
