FRANCIS PREP On Thursday, June 2nd, St. Francis Prep’s vaunted Science Research Program will host their annual symposium at the school. The night highlights the work of sophomore, junior, and senior students. When they begin the program as 10th graders, they learn to design and investigate scientific questions. As they progress and grow, they ultimately pick an area of research with the help of a professional research scientist. Some students will even travel out of the country to meet with their mentor. Prep’s Science Research Program has been very successful, with 13 of the last 17 years resulting A Prep student displays his work at Prep’s 2015 Science Research Symposium with Intel Science Talent Search semi-finalists. According to their website, “The Intel Science Talent Search (Intel STS), a program of Society for Science & the Public (SSP) is the nation’s most prestigious science research competition for high school seniors. Since 1942, first in partnership with Westinghouse and since 1998 with Intel, SSP has provided a national stage for the country’s best and brightest young scientists to present original research to nationally recognized professional scientists.” According to James Boylan, the program’s director, the students in Prep’s Science Research Program are some of the most highly motivated and involved in the school. While they excel at science, Boylan points out that many don’t pursue it as a career or course of study, but take the discipline and lessons learned with them into their collegiate and professional lives. In addition to Boylan, a graduate of Prep’s Director of Science Research, James Boylan WHERE TECHNOLOGY YOU? A Prep student displays her work at Prep’s 2015 Science Research Symposium Iona College and Fordham University, the program is also administered by Casey Clark, a graduate of New York University and Pennsylvania State University. St. Francis Prep’s Science Research Symposium is Thursday, June 2nd at 6:00PM, beginning in the school’s cafeteria. Senior Presentations will begin at 7:10PM, with awards at 8:00PM.
