As the Argonauts varsity baseball team begin their second campaign out of the developmental division, things could not have started better as they have racked up four consecutive wins to open the season, with one of the victories being a no-hitter. After defeating Wagner High School in backto back games (8-5 and 12-1) to kick off the year, senior Justin Cortese took the mound against Information Technology High School in the Argonauts’ third contest and pitched his firstever no-hitter. Cortese pitched all five innings of the game giving up zero runs, on three walks, no hits and seven strikeouts. The bats came alive for Maspeth, as they scored 10 runs in the game to pick up their second mercy rule win in a row. Sophomore second baseman Sebastian Rivera walked twice, scored two runs and stole four bases, while slugger Yorgenys Torres contributed with two runs and two RBIs on two hits with three stolen bases. “We have a pretty solid ball club here at Maspeth High School. The varsity team has a solid mix of sophomores, juniors and seniors who are all major contributors to the season,” said Stefan Singh, head coach. “We were pretty good last year, when we made the playoffs in our first season out of the developmental division. This year we are even better.” Things didn’t look so good for the Argonauts in their fourth game against the Academy for Careers in Television and Film on Monday, April 11, as they came out flat to open the game, Singh said. Sophomore starting pitcher Matthew Echeverry gave up four runs in three innings before exiting the game. Senior Brian Cabral took the bump in relief of Echeverry and shut down the opposition. Cabral threw three innings of no hit ball, recording eight strikeouts. Cabral helped his effort at the plate and went on to drive in what would eventually be the game-winning run in the bottom of the sixth inning. With a one-run lead heading into the top of the seventh inning, Senior Matthew Nickel came in for his first save attempt on the young season. Nickel walked the first two batters he faced, but then went on to strike out the next three to record his first save. “I truly hope the scouts come check out some of our seniors and juniors. We have some talented players who have the skill to play college ball,” Singh said of his players. “My expectation for this season is to play deep into the playoffs. Not to jinx it but, we believe in our players and the talent of this team, we are looking to bring a championship to Maspeth High School.” The Argonauts would like to thank Cross County Savings Bank and Ridgewood Savings Bank for their generous donations, which allowed the team to purchase new jerseys and equipment.
