Mets will host baseball’s fi rst Pride Night this August BY THE QUEENS COURIER STAFF editorial@qns.com @QueensCourier While the New York Mets were busy in Florida getting ready to defend their National League Championship, the team joined elected offi cials and LGBT advocates at Queens Borough Hall on Tuesday, Feb. 23, to announce that the club will host its fi rst “LGBT Pride Night” at Citi Field this August. In doing so, the Mets will become the fi rst professional sports team in New York City to hold a promotional event dedicated to the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community. Pride Night will take place on Saturday, Aug. 13, as the Mets host the San Diego Padres. The evening will feature special activities such as a pre-game “Pride in the Plaza” show and a postgame concert. Tickets are available for purchase at www. mets.com/pride. A portion of the proceeds will go to the LGBT Network, a nonprofi t organization, and its Safe Schools Initiative, which works with schools in Queens and Long Island to combat bullying. Queens Borough President Melinda Katz announced the event on Feb. 23 along with Councilman Daniel Dromm (fourth from right), Congressman Steve Israel (second from left), state Senator Jose Peralta (fourth from left), Assemblywoman Nily Rozic (at far left), Public Advocate Letitia James (third from right) and LGBT Network CEO David Kilmnick (fi fth from left).
