Film Discussion: Filmmaker Stuart Hersh will host a screening of Alice’s World, his acclaimed documentary about the life and legacy of Alice Austen (1866-1952), one of the earliest, most prolific and finest female photographers in the United States. Narrated by Broadway theater icon and Academy Award-winning actress Helen Hayes, the documentary highlights how, starting in 1884, Austen’s nearly 8,000 photographs documented the daily life of New Yorkers, from the upper middle-class of Staten Island to the poor of Manhattan’s Lower East Side. Born and raised in Victorian gentility, Austen died in virtual poverty at age 87. The airing of this documentary on television helped save Austen’s Staten Island home, Clear Comfort, now the Alice Austen House Museum, a National Historic Landmark.
