UP To DATE 42 North Shore Towers Courier n December 2015 Men’s Club Current Events Discussion Group is timely, lively and informative. BY GARY DARCHE As usual the Men’s Club Current Events Group met in Room One of the Coleridge Lounge. Fifteen members participated. There is an ebb and flow in the group, with new members participating as others depart for Florida. The format is to discuss issues that have been in the news over the past month. There is no lecture as such; but the members freely exchange a variety of facts and opinions. The strength of the group is the diversity of life experiences of a knowledgeable group of men. As always, discussion was active, engaging and informative. The fun is when one of the participants gives an insight from the point of view of what he has actually experienced. For example, when we discussed Naval challenges presented by China in the South China Sea, Mel Rubin gave the view from the Bridge of the USS Lexington where he served as a Navy Lieutenant in 1943/1944. John Rondinelli’s background in Law Enforcement provided insight, when we discussed FBI Director James Comey’s “assertion last week that additional scrutiny of law enforcement in the past year may have made police officers less aggressive, leading to a rise in violent crime in some cities.” Some of the other topics discussed were: • The Pacific Trade Agreement and Trans- Pacific Partnership • Changes in the House of Representatives and the agreement between President Obama and Congress on the 2-year budget and waiving limits on increases in the debt ceiling • The Presidential Campaign. Our next meeting will be held on Monday, December 14, 2015, at 10:30 am. PLEASE NOTE: In December, the Men’s Club Current Events group will meet on the second Monday of the month and not the first as in the past. The group convenes Photo by Toby Horowitz Club discussions have included FBI Director James Comey’s recent remarks on the effects of greater scrutiny on the actions of law enforcement The Men’s Club Current Events Group offers stimulating, intellectual and thought-provoking discussions on hot topics regarding political, economic and global trends and decisions that have an influence on our lives. If you are looking for a break from the typical card room small talk and the usual lunch activities, come join some of the Men’s Club’s brightest and smartest and share your thoughts on lively discussions about current subjects of interest. All opinions are welcomed. Member Mel Rubin spoke of his service on the USS Lexington The Trans-Pacific Agreement was one of the subjects of discussion
