10 North Shore Towers Courier n December 2015 Annette Mauer and Captain Gregory The Captain with Knitting Club President, A close-knit group Knitting and Crochet Club continues to help America’s veterans By Stephen Vratos // Photos by Julie Weisman Recently Captain Gregory Gittens of the 353rd Civil Affairs Command at Fort Wadsworth on Staten Island visited the Knitting and Crochet Club of North Shore Towers to thank its members for their continued support in creating and donating knitted and crocheted hats, scarves, blankets and other garments to the families of returning service people. A veteran of twenty-one years, who served in the first Iraq war under Commander-in- Chief President George Bush Sr., Gittens is now in the reserves, though continues to stay busy with a number of duties, including helping to coordinate the infrastructure in Africa. He thanked the members for their generosity and expressed his gratitude for the Knitting and Crochet Club not forgetting America’s returning veterans as most civilians often do. Soon after its founding more than seven years, the Club began making baby caps and blankets for abused mothers and their children. They expanded their efforts several years ago through NST resident Annette Mauer of Building #2. Mauer has been doing volunteer work for veterans for more than a decade. About ten years ago, she met Chaplain Murray Stadtmauer (now a NST resident) while volunteering at Fort Totten. Stadtmauer informed Mauer of the “Warmth for Warriors” program, which supplied donated hats to wounded servicemen. The Knitting and Crochet Club started providing homemade blankets and garments soon thereafter. The dedication, hard work and time that the members put into their creations is easily offset by the pride they feel for the work they’re doing and the appreciation they get from the veterans they’ve helped who’ve sent them letters and photos showing off the beautiful piece the Club Members have made for them. The Knitting and Crochet Club meets every Thursday evening at 7:00 pm in the large card room next to the movie theater.
