JOE REVEMAN: Publisher and Fund Raiser Just about everyone at NST has met Joe Reveman: honoree on many occasions by UJA, speaker at the Men’s Club, officer and treasurer of the Men’s Golf Club for 20 years. But, there are many other facets of Joe’s life that need to be explored. Over coffee in the VIP Room we discussed: Q: Where did you grow up, Joe? A: I attended De Witt Clinton HS in the Bronx and was drafted as soon as I graduated. After discharge from the Air Force, I attended NYU where I majored in accounting. What a mistake! After a few years, I realized I was a people person and not a numbers- cruncher. I then left accounting and sought my fortune in sales. Q: What was your principal occupation? A: For 30 years, I was involved in publishing and editing a catalogue marketing wines and spirits to customers of neighborhood liquor stores. It was called Guide to Good Hosting and came out once a year, in time for the December holidays. It grew to 52 pages and was available for in-store, direct mail and local newspaper distribution at no cost to the consumer. The format included editorial material such as drink recipes, food, wine and vintage charts, all designed to motivate the consumer to increase their knowledge of alcoholic beverages. Additionally, I sold advertising space to the largest suppliers of wines and spirits. A: individual store owner paid me for bulk orders of the catalogue at a modest price per copy. Most of A: I was stationed in England at the 398th Bomber Group and completed 24 bombing missions over Germany serving as a radio operator and gunner on the B-17 Flying Fortress. Not all of my buddies made it back. I was one of the lucky ones. I was in two plane crashes, and once was pulled out of a burning plane earning a Purple Heart. I’m still in close contact with them and we meet once a year in different American cities. I’m proud of the fact that Brian Falk made a DVD describing my war time service called: Riding the Airwaves. This has been shown to family. A: My wife Sylvia and I have been married 28 years. Sylvia’s professional career included eight years as Director of Social Work at Glen Cove Hospital, now part of LIJ-North Shore Hospital. Between us we have four daughters and three grandchildren. Q: What are your major “give back” activities? A: The UJA has been an important part of my life. I served in a variety of leadership roles and have been honored many times, most recently this year. I’m proud of a commendation given me by the central office of UJA recognizing NST as the largest fund raising group on Long Island. Through the years, they say I raised over $15 million. I’ve served as board member and treasurer of the Towers Men’s Golf Club since 1992 and have enjoyed my association with a great group of men. I look forward to the years ahead at the ever-improving North Shore Towers. 4 North Shore Towers Courier n December 2014 By FRED CHERNOW Q: Was it popular? People loved it and advertisers reached a select market. Ultimately it was available in 2,000 retail outlets all over America and was read by 1½ million consumers. There was nothing like it before or since. The my income came from the full page color ads by household n a m e s l i k e Bombay G i n , Grey Goose, Johnny Walker, etc. In exchange, I printed the store’s name on the cover. It was a win-win deal all around. Beverage Media bought me out in 1984 and I left Rockland County and moved to NST, the best move of my life. Q: What did you do during World War II ? hundreds of veteran groups, schools, and patriotic organizations. It is now part of the Library of Congress in Washington DC under the name “The Joseph Reveman Collection.” Q: Tell me something about your Joe and wife, Sylvia
