Many people were saddened
by the passing of
Ruth Bader Ginsburg in
September. The Supreme Court
Justice was the second female and
first female Jewish justice on the
court, having been nominated by
Bill Clinton in 1993 and confirmed
by Congress by an overwhelming
96-3 majority. More recently, “The
Notorious RBG” received nearly
rock-star status after a documentary
by that name and a theatrical film
(“On the Basis of Sex”) were both
successful and served as inspirations
to scores of women more than a
generation younger than she.
It was no surprise, then, that the
newly-formed Bystander’s Club at
North Shore Towers wanted to commemorate
the late Justice at one of
their first community events. As the
photos here show, the turnout on
October 7 was impressive, with the
tribute made even more so by the
attendance of Rabbi Meier Feldman
and Cantor Adam Davis of Temple
Beth El in Great Neck.
When asked about future plans
for the club, co-founder Carol
Meyerson said, “We’re a work in
progress, but we do know we want
to make connections with Queens
organizations to see where there is
a need and is there anything we can
do.” She said the group, which was
co-founded with Priscilla Smith and
Merle Levy, is especially attuned to
the impact of the pandemic. She
explained, “For example, we have
many teachers here who could tutor
kids who might be having a hard
time right now.”
Carol said that membership is picking
up quickly. “We started with about
15 people and now have a list of at
least a page and a half of names,” she
said. No doubt that list will be getting
longer in days to come.
How to Join the Bystander’s Club
We plan to have meetings by Zoom in the future that will deal with major issues of the day. Becoming
informed and learning what possibilities exist that we can support will hopefully make us Bystanders no
more. For more information, call or write any of us:
