The Teach: How To Impeach?
Speaking on the timely topic of
impeachment on Wednesday,
October 23, to an overflow
audience, Adjunct Professor of
American and Constitutional
History at Nassau Community
College James Coll addressed the
process. Coll›s goal was to inform the
audience on how the U.S. Constitution
came to embody the founders’
idea of holding elected officials
accountable.
The impeachment process is
actually rooted in English law. In
June 1797, impeachment clauses
were adopted by several states so
representatives had something
to work with. According to Coll,
the House was given the power to
impeach with a simple majority,
and the Senate had the power to
remove, but with two thirds of the
senators present.
Many articles and sections of the
Constitution deal with impeachment.
Coll went on to explain that
bribery and treason were considered
two elements of impeachable
offenses. To date, two presidents
have been impeached; Andrew
Jackson in 1860 and Bill Clinton in
1998, but neither man was removed
from office.
With the current climate of the
country focused on impeachment,
the timeliness of Professor Coll’s
impartial discussion was all the
more meaningful. His presentations
at Women›s Club programs are always
welcome events and we look forward
to his return in the near future.
CINEMA CLUB -
“A FAREWELL TO BOMBS”
A quality film, “The Farewell,”
was covered at the September 23
meeting of the Cinema Club held
in the movie theater. The Sundance
Film Festival entry had a strong
impact on the audience attending
the review, and a generally spirited
discussion ensued on the morality
of keeping secrets from terminally
ill family members. Differences in
the Chinese and American cultures
were very marked in this film with
legal restriction in the U.S. playing
a strong role in how to treat
end-of-life issues with loved ones.
Discussion leader Vicki Mazel
covered the plot line along with
commentary on how the film was
developed. Dr. Nurit Israeli provided
her special professional insight
into the motivation and defined the
aspects of relationships in family
units.
Up for review later this month is
the film “Luce” which has caused
quite a stir amongst residents. The
management of the Towers Movie
Theater is to be commended for
continuing to provide films of
excellence, and we are fortunate
to have the theater like this on our
premises. All residents are urged
to take advantage of the theater’s
programs. Become a regular, and
we hope to see you at one of the
review sessions!

Julius and Ethel Rosenberg -
Guilty or Not Guilty - What’s the
Verdict?
Wednesday, November 13,
7:15pm
Large Card Room
Speakers: Professors Howard
Ehrlich and Harvey Sackowitz
Convicted of espionage in 1951,
Julius and Ethel Rosenberg remain
a controversial subject to date. Were
they passing on nuclear weapon
secrets to the Soviet Union? At
that time, the U.S. was the only
country in the world with nuclear
weapons. The Rosenbergs were
portrayed by their sympathizers
as victims of Cold War paranoia.
Don’t miss this fascinating discussion
by two of our most informed
professors.

BAUBLES AND GEMS RULE
THE WORLD
Wednesday, December 4,
7:15pm
Large Card Room
Speaker: Marilyn Carminio
This special program by returning
lecturer Marilyn Carminio
will spotlight the use of jewels
and precious stones as a form
of currency; defining wealth and
social status with tokens of love,
heirlooms and adornments. Ms.
Carminio’s lectures are always
extremely interesting, and this
one takes on a perspective of
jewels and global power. Her
background as a teacher, assistant
to Helen Gurley Brown at
Cosmopolitan Magazine, and
numerous other managerial
endeavors gives her special
expertise in the field of creative
presentations along with unique
information. In this lecture, Ms.
Carminio will discuss how gems
have funded wars, caused a queen
to fall from favor, help a nation
enter the modern world, among
other fascinating uses for this
currency.
