Karaoke,
Anyone?
BY HOWARD ARKIN
On Thursday, October 10,
karaoke host Russell Craig
made his third appearance
at our North Shore Towers Men’s
Club function. Judging by the
atmosphere in the room as well
as the crowd’s reaction, it will
not be his last. For those of you
who do not know, Russell Craig
is an entertainer whose specialty
is singing as well as conducting
and hosting karaoke. He has been
wowing audiences with his amazing
voice and charisma for years.
Karaoke is a form of entertainment
in which people take turns
singing popular songs with pre-recorded
music. Audience members
take turns adding their vocals to
pre-recorded background music
in this popular form of entertainment.
That person’s performance
is usually quite distinguishable
from that of Luciano Pavarotti or
Tony Bennett.
The show opened with residents
Sandy Zemser giving her version
of “The Way You Look Tonight,”
Rita Di Giovanni singing “Volare,”
and concluded with Steve Weiland
belting out “New York, New York.”
Russell then introduced us to his
mother, Joan Lawrence, who happens
to be a North Shore Towers’
resident. They then proceeded to
do a medley of songs, one of them
being “I’ll Be Loving You Always,”
which was dedicated to Shirley and
Sidney Silvers who were celebrating
their 70th wedding anniversary.
About halfway through the
show, Neil Diamond’s rendition
of “Sweet Caroline” made its usual
appearance. Have you ever noticed
that “Sweet Caroline” has been a
staple at almost all affairs? I believe
that someday it may find its way
into communions, births and even
funerals. The undisputed star of
the evening was the “great” Murray
Levine. Listening to him sing Frank
Sinatra’s 1945 “The House I Live
In” was truly inspiring. Murray still
has that same powerful voice that
he showed us on the Ed Sullivan
Show 55 years ago.
After the show, Russell and Joan
shared two bits of information that
I was unaware of. The first one
was that Russell had once hosted
a karaoke night at one of Queens’
oldest Chinese and Polynesian
restaurant, King Yum in Hillcrest.
King Yum was considered to be a
landmark by many. I myself lived
in that neighborhood for many
years and went to King Yum quite
often. Unfortunately, I missed the
karaoke, but made up for it with
lots of General Tso’s Chicken!
Joan also told me that a few years
ago North Shore Towers used to
have its own band that she sang
with on occasion. Another resident
who was a member of the
North Shore Towers Band was
Gary Zemser. He can be seen in
a clip from a number of years ago
performing on North Shore Towers
Channel 995. The evening proved
to be one of the liveliest of the
Men’s Club events and I’m sure
that Jerry Siegel will be sure to have
karaoke night return in the future.
MEN’S CLUB
ANNUAL BREAKFAST
The North Shore Towers Men’s
Club held their annual breakfast
on October 13 at Towers on the
Green with 133 members in attendance.
Led by Steve Auerbach, I
was very impressed with the Men’s
Club Board effort to make this
event as perfect as possible. They
truly outdid themselves. Buffy’s
food was great and a good time
was had by all. Kudos to Buffy
as well for sending trays of food
up to Toby Horowitz’s apartment.
I’m sure that helped speed up his
recovery.
