12 North Shore Towers Courier n October 2014 NST’s Knitting Club in Pictures Judy Roth, Knitting Club President displaying the numerous blankets the club has produced The North Shore Towers Knitting and Crocheting group meets every Thursday evening starting at 6:30 pm in the large card room on the lower level of Building Two. The group has members with varying needlecraft skill levels – from beginner to expert – each paying $2 / month in dues to cover the cost of materials which are supplied. Carol Klinger, a resident of North Shore Towers since 2012, is one of the very skilled members. She remembers her earliest project as knitting squares for the soldiers in World War II while she was in 3rd or 4th grade. By age 15, she was knitting argyle sweaters. Before moving to the Towers, Carol lived in Sands Point after a move from Great Neck. While living in her houses, Carol used a professional knitting machine to create children’s clothes, toys, blankets and sweaters. Her work was so good that she sold many of the items she made. On the floor of Carol’s apartment in Building 2, is a magnificent needlepoint rug that she made. She used to give lessons in needlepoint at Open Door to Stitchery for a few years. Surprisingly, needlecrafts are not something Carol had professional training in. She earned her Bachelor of Arts at Brooklyn College in psychology. At CW Post, she received a Master’s Degree in accounting and worked towards a PhD at NYU. Carol taught accounting for close to 30 years at Queens College. Carol has 3 children and 7 grandchildren and is an avid golfer and swimmer and has been working with computer software since 1978. Have you been thinking about learning to knit or to crochet? If you are interested in taking lessons with Carol, or one of the other expert volunteers in our group, please call Judi Ross at 347-235-4509. The cost of lessons is $25 for four one hour lessons.
