NST Women’s Club held their monthly
program on Wednesday, August 15, in
the downstairs card room. After opening
remarks by President Bobbie Gould and
Vice President in charge of Programming Gloria
Beck, featured speaker Marilyn Carminio introduced
her program, “The President’s Wives.” The
presentation was well attended, and Carminio,
a former assistant to Helen Gurley Brown, offered
an overview of life in the White House for
selected wives of recent presidents. Spotlighting
Barbara Bush, Hillary Clinton, Laura Bush
and Michelle Obama, the program was replete
with their accomplishments, wardrobes, taste
in china for state house dinners, and especially
areas of interest, citing Hillary Clinton’s focus
on health care, Laura Bush’s on literacy, Aids,
and education in underserved communities, and
Michelle Obama’s involvement in childhood
obesity and fitness, to mention a few. Perhaps
the best quote of the wives came from Eleanor
Roosevelt who said, “Do what you feel in your
heart to be right—for you will be criticized for
it anyway.”
SUMMER WORKSHOPS A HUGE SUCCESS
Women’s Club summer workshops,
“Reflection on Aging,” developed by clinical
social worker Barbara Goldstein, has been
declared a resounding success. Set up to
encourage members to participate in small discussion
groups dealing with changes in status,
relationships, widowhood, and most popular of
the series, “Whose face is that in the mirror?”,
the workshops were facilitated by Goldstein,
who is a resident of North Shore Towers as
well as a club member. An experienced social
worker who’s worked with school children
and senior citizens, she currently works at the
Sid Jacobson JCC, where she counsels both
individuals and support groups. We look forward
to her continued professional leadership
in this area and hope to plan more workshops
in the future.
